Boom Supersonic, an aerospace company building the world’s fastest civil aircraft, and leading industrial technology company, Rolls-Royce, announced on July 30, an engagement agreement to explore the pairing of a Rolls-Royce propulsion system with Boom’s flagship supersonic passenger aircraft, Overture.

The goal of the new agreement is to work together to identify the propulsion system that would complement Boom’s Overture airframe. The engagement will involve teams from Boom and Rolls-Royce collaborating in engine-airframe matching activities for Boom’s flagship supersonic passenger aircraft, Overture. The teams will also examine certain key aspects of the propulsion system. The teams will investigate whether an existing engine architecture can be adapted for supersonic flight, while Boom’s internal team continues to develop the airframe configuration.

The priorities of this engagement are informed by Boom and Rolls-Royce’s shared commitment to sustainability. Both companies recognize that supersonic passenger travel has to be compatible with a net-zero carbon future, and the two teams will work together to address sustainability in Overture design and operations. Overcoming the technological challenges of supersonic flight provides a unique opportunity to accelerate innovation sustainably.

As a result of this collaboration, Boom and Rolls-Royce expect to make significant progress towards finalizing Overture’s aircraft configuration and propulsion system.

We’re looking forward to providing a safe, sustainable and convenient way for them to stay mobile and support local businesses as the city continues to recover and rebuild.”
“Yonkers is pleased to once again lead the way as a progressive city in offering smart, emission-free transportation solutions for our community,” said Yonkers Mayor Spano. “Partnering with Bird will provide residents and visitors the opportunity to travel our city with ease and convenience all while being affordable, reliable and fun.”

Bird, the leader in shared short range electric transportation, in collaboration with representatives from the city of Yonkers, NY today announced Bird will be the exclusive provider of shared e-scooters to residents and visitors. This marks the first ever e-scooter pilot in New York State and is scheduled to launch in August with its fleet of Bird Twos. The Bird Two represents an unmatched advancement from a city, rider, and hardware experience.
Resulting from Mayor Spano’s commitment to sustainability, Yonkers is a micromobility pioneer, having been one of the first cities in New York to embrace dockless bike share in 2018. The City is now further advancing its commitment to sustainability and safe streets by bringing residents access to additional sustainable transportation options with Bird shared e-scooters. Yonkers’ embrace of shared e-scooters is also another strong indication that urban transportation is rapidly evolving in response to a coronavirus pandemic that has underscored the importance of sustainable, socially distant mobility options. During COVID-19 lockdowns around the world, cities globally have introduced plans for more than 2600 additional miles of slow streets and temporary bike lanes.

RECOVER THMaE MARCONI WIRELESS TELEGRAPH

RMS Titanic, Inc., announced on July 22, that it will conduct its ground-breaking rescue expedition to Titanic, nearly 109 years after its maiden voyage, to recover the Marconi Wireless Telegraph from inside Titanic, in late spring/early summer of 2021. RMST is also pleased to announce further details regarding the Marconi recovery and the subsea tooling that will be utilized at the work site.

The first recovery expedition of its kind to Titanic, RMST has brought together a team of leading scientist, marine archaeologist and deep-sea engineering experts to help carefully and thoughtfully recover the telegraph that was instrumental in saving more than 705 passengers from the Atlantic in April 1912. After its recovery and conservation, the telegraph will be shared with the general public in museums and other institutions around the world as part of the touring museum experience Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition. During the expedition, the team will also monitor the current rate of deterioration of Titanic and conduct further recovery and scientific study as necessary

After lengthy review and expert consultation, the organization has developed a multi-phase, dual ROV, non-evasive method to safely excavate and investigate the Marconi Radio. This new tooling and methodology will allow us to expose the key components in their current resting state and determine if safe extraction and recovery is possible. This unique dual ROV ladder deployment system on the Titan manipulators will allow non-evasive entry to areas of interest without wreck disturbance. Each ROV will be equipped with their respective tooling to first dredge and clean the area for a thorough investigation. Components approved safe for extraction will be gently removed using both ROV’s and collected to salvage baskets for safe recovery to the surface. The organization has also released additional imagery of the custom deep-sea tools that will be used to recover the Marconi.

Originally scheduled to occur this summer, the expedition has been moved to 2021 to abide by ongoing travel restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The safety of our crew, ports where we conduct business and foremost the care of the artifacts is our top priority,” states Bretton Hunchak, President of RMS Titanic, Inc. “Given the ongoing pandemic, current travel restrictions and the changing landscape, we have no choice but to move this important expedition. We will continue to refine our strategies and further our outreach to the community so that all can enjoy this historic moment. We look forward to 2021 and conducting this expedition with our partners and the world.”

“We appreciate the flexibility and understanding of our partnerships, including that of Magellan Limited and Managing Director Richard Parkinson, who have worked tirelessly with our team to help determine the best course of action with thoughtful and resourceful solutions,” continues Hunchak.

“It’s been a pleasure working with RMS Titanic and applying Magellan’s expansive skill, equipment and experience in ultra-deep-water. We are particularly proud that our company, headquartered out of St. Peter Port, Guernsey, has been chosen to play an instrumental role in a project of such global significance,” states Richard Parkinson, Managing Director of Magellan Limited.

ROYAL CARIBBEAN GROUP

REINVENTS

CRUISE INDUSTRY’S SAFETY DRILL

Selected by The Editorial Team 🙂

ADS / BIZ  /  UPS – BOLD BLUEBERRY AND CHERRY MAGAZINE

July  28, 2020

Royal Caribbean Group is replacing one of the least-loved but most important parts of a cruise vacation – the safety drill – with Muster 2.0™, an entirely new approach to delivering safety information to guests. The innovative program, the first of its kind, reimagines a process originally designed for large groups of people into a faster, more personal approach that encourages higher levels of safety.

With Muster 2.0, the key elements of the safety drill – including reviewing what to expect and where to go in case of an emergency, and instructions on how to properly use a life jacket – will be accessible to guests on an individual basis instead of a group approach that has been followed historically. New technology, eMuster™, will be used to help provide the information to guests via their mobile devices and interactive stateroom TVs. Travelers will be able to review the information at their own time prior to setting sail, eliminating the need for the traditional large group assemblies. The new approach also enables everyone on board to maintain better spacing as guests move about the ship, and it allows guests to enjoy more of their vacation with no interruption.

HELPS GUESTS SAIL AWAY SMOOTLY

After reviewing safety information individually, guests will complete the drill by visiting their assigned assembly station, where a crew member will verify that all steps have been completed and answer questions. Each of the steps will need to be completed prior to the ship’s departure, as required by international maritime law.

This marks the first dramatic change to the safety drill process in a decade, since Royal Caribbean’s Oasis of the Seas moved the life jackets from guest staterooms to the muster stations, which improved the evacuation process and has been widely followed throughout the industry. More than a year in the making, Muster 2.0 is also an initiative that will be part of the comprehensive set of protocols and procedures Royal Caribbean Group is developing along with the Healthy Sail Panel that was recently assembled in collaboration with Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd.

The distributed muster for ocean-going vessels concept is patented in the United States and is patent-pending in major markets around the world, including the various cruise industry flag states. The company has also worked with international regulators, the U.S. Coast Guard and other maritime and government authorities to ensure it meets all safety requirements.

In addition to introducing the new process on the ships of its own cruise lines – Royal Caribbean International, Celebrity Cruises and Azamara – Royal Caribbean Group is offering to license the patented technology to interested cruise operators and will waive patent license fees during the time the world and industry battle the global pandemic. Patent licenses have already been granted to the company’s joint venture, TUI Cruises GmbH, as well as Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd., the parent company of Norwegian Cruise Line, Oceania Cruises and Regent Seven Seas Cruises.

Muster 2.0 was first tested on Royal Caribbean’s Symphony of the Seas in January 2020. Guests who took part in the mock process indicated a strong preference for the new approach and also reported better comprehension and retention of the safety information.

“The health and safety of our guests and crew are our number one priority, and the development of this new muster process is an elegant solution to an outdated, unpopular process,” said Richard Fain, chairman and CEO, Royal Caribbean Group. “The fact that this will also save guests time and allow the ship to operate without pause means that we can increase health, safety and guest satisfaction simultaneously.”
“Muster 2.0 represents a natural extension of our mission to improve our guests’ vacation experiences by removing points of friction,” said Jay Schneider, Royal Caribbean Group’s senior vice president of digital. “In this instance, what’s most convenient for our guests is also the safest option in light of needing to reimagine social spaces in the wake of COVID-19.”

“This new process represents the kind of innovation that the Healthy Sail Panel is focusing on as part of its mission to enhance the health and safety of cruising,” said former Utah Gov. Mike Leavitt, co-chair of the Healthy Sail Panel. “It shows that we can accomplish a lot if we try to think outside the box on safety.”

“I’d like to extend my congratulations to Royal Caribbean Group on this innovative milestone. It’s exactly what our industry needs during these unprecedented times and we appreciate the generous offer to participate in this innovation,” said Frank Del Rio, President and CEO, Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd. “In this industry, we all work cooperatively to enhance health and safety, and this is an example of that.”

PREPARES TO REOPEN WITH NEW PROTOCOLS

For the first few weeks, hours of operation will be reduced to 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. Tickets for set times can be purchased at www.esbnyc.com. Initial capacity will be reduced by more than 80% to only 500 guests in the Observatories’ 70,000 square foot space at a time, and well below the 25% capacity guideline set forth in Phase 4. This policy will allow for the separation of groups by more than 18 feet. The $165 million redevelopment of the Observatories that was concluded in December 2019 created a separate entrance dedicated to Observatory visitors.

Empire State Realty Trust’s (ESRT) portfolio-wide Indoor Environmental Quality standards were incorporated as part of the Observatories redevelopment. Air quality related components at the Observatory include MERV 13 air filters, AtmosAir air purification, and constant ventilation through the introduction of fresh air to, and the exhaust interior air from, the Observatories. These are the standards in all ESRT’s new office installations.

Guest protocols will include a contactless temperature check (must have a temperature of less than 100.4 degrees) and the requirement to wear a facial covering throughout their visit. Certain interactive exhibits will run on automatic and binocular viewers, which require close eye contact by visitors, will be closed. At the time of reopening, all Hosts, Cleaning, and Security personnel will be trained in additional customer service, use of PPE, new cleaning procedures, tracing, and back-of-house protocols.

“We will reopen the universally-recognized symbol of New York City to the world, our brand new $165 million Observatory experience, and so state that New York is resilient and that our future holds promise,” said Anthony E. Malkin, Chairman, President, and CEO of Empire State Realty Trust. “Our decade’s long commitment to Indoor Environmental Quality is accompanied by new protocols and employee training which comply with government requirements. Visits will initially be limited to below New York State’s Phase 4 capacity guidelines, and we will prevent crowds through a shift to timed, online reservations only. The reduced capacity and lack of tourists from out of town will create a unique ‘New York for New Yorkers’ experience.”

“Our work has been thorough with new training guidelines and customer service standards. We have taken measures with signage, distancing markers, hand sanitizers, and cleaning; beyond anything any retailer or public space we have surveyed,” stated Observatory President Jean-Yves Ghazi. “As leaders, we have posted our complete reopening program on www.esbnyc.com for the public to view, both to give our guests confidence and to help guide other attractions in best practices.”

The MIAMI Association of REALTORS (MIAMI) is hosting its second South Florida Virtual Open House Showcase (SouthFloridaOpenHouseSearch.com) event on May 22-25 to provide consumers virtual access to property tours, open houses, and direct interaction with Realtors and other industry experts while adhering to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s recommended social distancing guidelines during COVID-19.

From anywhere across the U.S. or around the world, buyers and investors can view live streaming open house events or take recorded virtual tours hosted by our top agents, view the properties, learn more about their features, amenities and even about the neighborhood from the comfort of their home or office.

Visitors to SouthFloridaOpenHouseSearch.com can contact the agents direct from the property information page via email or phone – there’s even the widely used feature of downloading an electronic brochure in English, Spanish or Portuguese. Consumers needing more information on available financing and mortgage rates, inspection process and title services compliant with CDC Guidelines can take advantage of “Ask the Experts,” a new chat feature putting consumers in contact with professionals providing real estate affiliated services.

Consumers and professionals also have access every day, 24 hours a day, to all of our residential single family homes, condominiums, townhomes and investment properties plus tours and videos are available from our 52,000 members in Miami, Broward, Palm Beach, Martin and beyond. Bookmark SouthFloridaOpenHouseSearch.com and visit often – properties change daily.

MIAMI’s first Virtual Open House Showcase, held May 1-10, saw 2,303 virtual open houses and virtual tours loaded for the event. About 40,515 visitors visited SouthFloridaOpenHouseSearch.com over the 10 days, viewing a whopping 178,809 pages. Top U.S. visitors by state were New York, Virginia, Texas, New Jersey and California. Top international visitors by country were Colombia, Venezuela, Germany, Philippines, the United Kingdom and Canada.

The Virtual Open House Showcase relaunches MIAMI’s South Florida Virtual Open House Program virtually. While COVID-19 is expected to temporarily impact home sales on a global level, MIAMI remains optimistic the robust fundamentals of the South Florida housing market will minimize the impact, and sales activity will resume later in the year, as things normalize and pent-up demand builds.

Current interest rates make purchasing a home an excellent decision. Interest rates are at near all-time lows, and some lenders are extending lock-in rates for up to 90 days.

“Our first Virtual Open House Showcase was such a hit with our members and consumers that we are leveraging the upcoming four-day weekend, May 22-25, to showcase the best of the best that South Florida has to offer consumers across the country and around the world,” MIAMI Chairman of the Board Jorge Guerra Jr. said. “Through virtual open houses and tours, homebuyers can shop from the comfort and safety of their own home. They can ask for video and virtual tours or schedule a personal video walkthrough.”

May  21, 2020

TOURtech, a leader in providing innovative IT solutions, today unveiled its Touchless Menu technology, which broadcasts digital menus onto guests’ personal smart devices. This system eliminates the need for disposable and reusable menus, supporting social distancing guidelines and helping reduce multi-touch items that can spread COVID-19 and other germs.

System transmits digital menus onto guests’ personal smart devices

Touchless Menu technology is user-friendly for both businesses and customers. The Touchless Menu system is integrated into one complete unit. Businesses simply plug the provided box into a power source and customize their menus with drag-and-drop tools, and the system is ready to use. Menus or other important messages appear on customers’ smart devices when they connect to the restaurant’s personalized menu WiFi signal, broadcast by the Touchless Menu system.

In addition to the health benefits, transitioning to digital menus helps businesses cut printing costs, increase the speed and flexibility of menu changes and reduce waste. It is also an affordable option for businesses of varying sizes.

“We all want to reopen bars and restaurants, but in the safest possible way,” said Allen Cook, founder and CEO of TOURtech. “Our technology provides safe ordering for customers and staff so restaurant owners can focus on what they do best—giving people a great dining experience.”

For many years, designer Christophe GERNIGON has been conceiving objects and designer fur- niture.
In his creative nocturnal meanderings during these months of con nement and already as a pro- ponent of the avant-garde, he imagined an unusual way of welcoming clients anxious to go to bars and restaurants

Though we would have preferred not to arrive at this point, it is now better to imagine alternative, designed, elegant and aesthetic solutions that will guarantee social distancing regulations.
In this constructive, innovative state of mind, Christophe GERNIGON imagined the creative PLEX’EAT concept of suspended, protective, XXL Plexiglas visors that let each person dine or have a drink in total security.

Christophe GERNIGON is a French designer and decorator who has been working in the elds of interior design and scenography for over 20 years. After Carré Blanc (household linens), Maison Sarah Lavoine and Arts & In uences (a lifestyle concept store he launched in Brussels), he created the 100% made in France start-up for participative design, Designer Particulier, in 2018 and, in parallel, his own design agency: CHRISTOPHE GERNIGON STUDIO.

France supports the decision to postpone World Expo Dubai to next year

OFFICIAL STATEMENT

Selected by The Editorial Team 🙂

May  05, 2020

France Pavilion reinvents itself tackling today’s challenges and is looking forward to welcoming visitors in 2021

Through its Commissioner General for the World Expo 2020 Dubai, France supports the decision to postpone the event by one year, from October 1st, 2021 to March 31st, 2022.  This postponement has been officially announced by Expo 2020 Dubai and is set to be approved by the Bureau International des Expositions’ (BIE) on May 29th.

The France Pavilion, with the support of Compagnie Française des Expositions (COFREX), the body in charge of organizing France’s participation in international and world exhibitions, and its partners, invite visitors to share their renewed ambition in October 2021. The one-year postponement will give France the opportunity to reinvent its Pavilion to better suit today’s global challenge of innovative eco-friendly and user-oriented mobility solutions.

France, through its Commissioner General for World Expo 2020 Dubai, has voiced its support of the decision made by more than two-thirds of BIE’s Member States and the organizers of Expo 2020 Dubai; a reasonable and responsible step during these uncertain times. The decision to postpone the event, supported by France and by more than two-third of BIE’s Member States, aims to ensure that the millions of visitors expected at Expo can enjoy the event in the best of conditions.

The goal of a World Expo is to raise awareness and work towards solving the greatest challenges we face today. Expo 2020 Dubai’s theme of “Connecting Minds, Creating the Future” is now more important than ever. All nations will come together for six months to brainstorm, pitch and implement concrete solutions to serve humankind. Given the current health crisis, this theme is no longer a suggestion, but a priority.

France will echo this need, using the France Pavilion to convey how French innovation can play a part in reaching that goal. This international event will give France a platform to showcase its actions and innovations featuring new eco-friendly and user-oriented mobility solutions.

“I recognize this responsible decision, which is the most suitable given the current international health crisis and demonstrates a collective will to keep everyone safe and healthy. Through COFREX’s actions and with the support from our sponsors, France’s participation will be even more impactful. This extra year will give us the opportunity to further focus on the program and experience we want to create for our visitors on the France Pavilion. It is also our responsibility to contribute to and support post-crisis efforts to reboot the French economy,” said Erik Linquier, Commissioner General for the France Pavilion at World Expo 2020 Dubai and Chairman of COFREX.

The France Pavilion’s sponsors positively welcomed the decision to postpone the event in order to focus on the health and safety of the international community. They confirmed their support through maintaining their participation in the France Pavilion, and COFREX would like to thank them for their trust, cooperation and efforts. COFREX is delighted to keep working with its sponsors to make France’s participation in the World Expo a unique experience for its visitors. The success of France’s participation in the World Expo 2020 Dubai will also and above all be measured by the success of the companies involved, economic stakeholders and local French authorities, which will showcase their actions in contributing to the economic rebound we are all working towards.

Furthermore, France Pavilion continues to be built under the Emirate authorities’ health and safety rules. The construction team working on the France Pavilion is closely monitored every day by the medical staff of the building company BESIX to ensure their health.

SEAN COMBS Launches

“OUR FAIR SHARE” NEW PLATFORM

Selected by The Editorial Team 🙂

ADS / BIZ  /  UPS – BOLD BLUEBERRY AND CHERRY MAGAZINE

April  23, 2020

Entrepreneur and Media Mogul Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs today launched OURFAIRSHARE.com, a platform built to help minority entrepreneurs and small businesses access much-needed capital amid the economic devastation brought by COVID-19. The initial round of Paycheck Protection Program (“PPP) dollars disproportionately went to those with the right connections, rather than the greatest needs, Our Fair Share will help minority-owned companies learn about the PPP and get connected to approved Small Business Association (SBA) lenders that can process applications for these potentially business-saving loans.

FOR MINORITY-OWNED SMALL BUSINESSES

“COVID-19 is devastating our communities and without access to stimulus funding we risk losing critical businesses that create jobs and help build opportunities and wealth in our communities.” said Combs. “I created Our Fair Share to help entrepreneurs play on an even playing field and give them a chance to survive with the hope to thrive.”

Combs further announced a partnership with the National Bankers Association, the trade group representing minority-owned financial institutions, to connect minority-owned banks and financial technology companies to the Our Fair Share platform and enable these banks to originate PPP loans from applicants that utilize the site.

Our Fair Share is designed to help ensure diverse small businesses, independent contractors and nonprofits, to understand that they are eligible and how to apply for PPP. This provides clear information about the requirements for a successful application. The applications are connected to approved PPP lenders. The lead institutions are: The Harbor Bank of Maryland, based in Baltimore, MD, Liberty Bank and Trust, based in New Orleans, LA, Carver State Bank, based in Savannah, GA, and Lendistry, an online small business lender based in Los Angeles, CA.

Combs also shared a longer-term vision for Our Fair Share as a connector for entrepreneurs searching for capital and capital providers. The platform will be dedicated to getting funding into the hands of the entrepreneurs that need it and will evolve to meet the needs of the minority small business community.

On Tuesday 21, the Senate passed $484 billion in new pandemic relief funds to provide additional funding to the PPP small business aid program, pay for coronavirus testing and help hospitals deluged by sick patients. The PPP is a part of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act, the $2 trillion stimulus package the US Congress approved on March 27, 2020 to combat the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The new package would provide $320 billion to allow the PPP to take new applicants for the program, which provides forgivable loans to small business that keep employees on the payroll for eight weeks. In addition, $30 billion of the PPP loan funds are set aside for banks and credit unions with $10 billion to $50 billion in assets, and another $30 billion is set aside for even- smaller institutions.

Combs also extended an invitation for major financial institutions to partner with Our Fair Share.

Let NASA Bring the Universe to Your Home

NASA’s new Internet and social media special, NASA at Home, will show and engage you in the agency’s discoveries, research, and exploration from around the world and across the universe – all from the comfort of your own home.

NASA at Home offers something for the whole family. It brings together a repository of binge-worthy videos and podcasts, engaging E-books on a variety of topics, do-it-yourself projects, and virtual and augmented reality tours, which include the agency’s Hubble Space Telescope and International Space Station, as well as an app that puts you in the pilot’s seat of a NASA aircraft.

“We know people everywhere, especially students, are looking for ways to get out of the house without leaving their house,” said Bettina Inclán, associate administrator for NASA’s Office of Communications. “NASA has a way for them to look to the skies and see themselves in space with their feet planted safely on the ground, but their imaginations are free to explore everywhere we go. We’ve put that information at their fingertips. We hope everyone takes a few moments to explore NASA at Home.”

This special also spotlights educational and entertaining resources and activities for families and students in kindergarten and up. Plus, it provides access to everything from formal lesson plans to amazing imagery and stories about how science and exploration help the world.

If you want to practice safe science at home, we have opportunities for citizen scientists to contribute to real ongoing research, from our solar system’s backyard to your own backyard. This includes searching for brown dwarfs and planets in our outer solar system and helping track changes in clouds, water, plants, and other life in support of climate research.

NASA at Home will feature ongoing opportunities to interact and hear from agency experts. For example, record-breaking astronaut Christina Koch reads children’s books weekdays at 4 p.m. EDT on Instagram live as part of educational and STEM activity for students.

NASA Television also is running NASA at Home-themed programming 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.  weekdays, as well as broadcasting around-the-clock with recent mission events and news, conversations with astronauts on the International Space Station, educational looks at science, technology and exploration topics, and historical programs from the agency’s storied past.

March 31, 2020

The impressive growth of cryptocurrencies over the last year was followed by a surge in coin mining, as a way of investing in virtual currencies without having to put down money for it.

As the most significant name in cryptocurrency in terms of both market cap and price index, the Bitcoin generated the highest revenue in coin mining.

According to data gathered by Finanso.se, the global Bitcoin mining revenue increased ten times in the last three years, reaching a $5bn value in 2019.

Bitcoin Mining Income Jumped 65%

Between 2017 and 2018

The bitcoin miners support, legitimate, and monitor the Bitcoin network and its blockchain. Their task is challenging and only sporadically rewarding. Nevertheless, it has become an appealing activity for many investors interested in cryptocurrency because miners are rewarded with bitcoins for completing blocks of verified transactions added to the blockchain.

In 2016, the global mining revenue reached $260 million value, revealed the Statista data. Over the next twelve months, this figure increased more than 2.5 times and reached $700 million. The most significant rise in the global bitcoin mining profits happened between 2016 and 2017 when the revenue jumped from $550 million to nearly $3.2bn. In 2018, bitcoin miners gained a record profit of $5.26bn globally.

Although the income dropped to over $5bn till the end of 2019, this amount is still 19 times larger than the 2013 figures. Nearly $4.9bn of the entire 2019 revenue was in the form of block rewards, while the rest was delivered via transaction fees.

The Record Number of Bitcoin Daily Transactions

Due to the situation of unprecedented gravity created by the coronavirus crisis, President Macron announced very strong measures that specifically include a drastic reduction of our movements in France, Europe and abroad.

Our recommendation to French citizens who are abroad temporarily is to take all necessary measures to return to France promptly. To assist them, the Transport Ministry has asked airline companies to maintain their flights to France to the greatest possible extent and to lower their prices. The Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs, together with all of our diplomatic and consular posts, is mobilizing all of its efforts to obtain authorization for special air connections, and for these air connections to be serviced by commercial flights. These steps have been successful in several locations.

For our fellow citizens who are waiting for a flight and do not have a place to stay, we have just established an emergency service to connect French citizens stranded abroad in difficult circumstances with French citizens living outside of France who have volunteered to host them. This service, through which one may offer or request a place to stay, is available at the following address: www.sosuntoit.fr

This site was established under the auspices of the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs, thanks to the dedication of the Fédération internationale des Accueils Français et francophones à l’étranger (FIAFE).

This project was made possible thanks to the solidarity of web experts and entrepreneurs, who created this platform within just a few hours.

March 19, 2020

Paris, March 19, 2020 – Given the evolution and the gravity of the situation regarding COVID-19, the fifth edition of Viva Technology, Europe’s biggest startup and tech event, will not take place June 11-13. Alternative solutions are being studied, in concertation with the main partners of the event, and will be announced soon.

The containment measures decreed by the national authorities in France now make it impossible to prepare and organize the event on the dates originally planned. Especially since, as announced, the containment is likely to be extended as has been the case in China and Italy. VivaTech’s priority is to guarantee the health and safety of visitors, partners and staff and to show solidarity and responsibility in the face of this health crisis.

According to Julie Ranty, VivaTech’s Managing Director, “The co-Presidents, Maurice Lévy and Pierre Louette, and I are unable to maintain our June event in this context, given that everyone’s health and safety is our first priority. We are studying alternatives. This complex period pushes us to be even more flexible and creative. For the time being our thoughts are with all those affected by the disease and with all the businesses who are going through this crisis. We thank all of our partners who have renewed their support and commitment to building the next edition with us. ”

Propagation of Shocks in Global Value Chains:

The Coronavirus Case

The Covid-19 pandemic is currently affecting the entire world, with significant economic impact. A group of economics researchers from Institut Polytechnique de Paris (affiliated with École Polytechnique and ENSAE Paris) and Institut des Politiques Publiques (IPP – CREST [1] and Paris School of Economics) study the propagation of geographically concentrated productivity slowdown to the global economy through global value chains. Their note, published today, aims to quantify the total exposure of France compared to other countries.

Before spreading globally, the Covid-19 epidemic was concentrated in the Hubei province. To contain the spread of the virus, the Chinese government has imposed quarantine measures and travel restrictions, entailing a significant slowdown of economic activity. A group of economics researchers from CREST (Institut Polytechnique de Paris and Institut Politiques Publiques) study the propagation of this geographically concentrated productivity slowdown to the global economy, through global value chains.

Reliance on Chinese inputs has dramatically increased since the early 2000s. As a consequence, most countries are exposed to the Chinese productivity slowdown, both directly through their imports of Chinese inputs and indirectly, through other inputs themselves produced with some Chinese value added. Their note, published on the IPP website today, aims to quantify the total exposure of France compared to other countries. They first compute the share of Chinese value added in French production. Then, they quantify the impact of travel restrictions on the French GDP, using multi-country sectoral data on trade in intermediate goods.

Overall, their study draws the following conclusions:

  • Production processes are increasingly spread across borders. Production within “Global Value Chains” allows firms to save on costs but renders value chains vulnerable to local supply shocks.
  • The recent outbreak of CV-19 is a dramatic example that is used to measure the impact of a local production drop on the global economy through trade links.
  • In France, 3.2% of firms’ output pays Chinese inputs, on average. In some sectors like textile or electrical equipment, the proportion is above 10%.
  • A 10% drop in Chinese productivity could reduce French GDP by 0.3% through trade links only.
  • The shock is transmitted to the French economy through few large firms which produce out of foreign inputs.
  • Optimal policy responses to supply chain disruptions include providing liquidity to distressed firms in the short-run.
  • More data on value chains at firm-level is needed to identify weaknesses in the French productive structure and better target subsidies in case of a future shock.
