A Comic Book Convention or Comic Con is an Event with a primary focus on Comic Books and Comic Book Culture, in which Comic Book Fans gather to meet Creators, Experts, and each other. Commonly, Comic Conventions are Multi-Day Events hosted at Convention Centers, Hotels, or College Campuses. They feature a wide variety of Activities and Panels, with a larger number of Attendees participating in Cosplay than most other types of Fan Conventions. Comic Book Conventions are also used as a Vehicle for Industry, in which Publishers, Distributors, and Retailers represent their Comic-Related Releases. Comic Book Conventions may be considered Derivatives of Science-Fiction Conventions, which began in the late 1930s.
At Commercial Events, Comic Book Creators often give out Autographs to the Fans, sometimes in exchange for a Flat Appearance Fee, and sometimes may draw Illustrations for a Per-Item Fee. Commercial Conventions are usually quite Expensive. This represents a Change in Comic Book Conventions, which traditionally were more oriented toward Comic Books as a mode of Literature, and maintained a less Caste-Like Differentiation between Professional and Fan. Nowadays, Comic Conventions are Big Business with recurring Shows in Major Cities. The Biggest Shows include a large range of Pop Culture and Entertainment Elements across virtually all genres, including Horror, Animation, Anime, Manga, Toys, Collectible Card Games, Video Games, Webcomics, and Fantasy Novels.

Vernissage Exhibition “Le Grand Opéra, 1828-1867. Le Spectacle de l’Histoire”. On October 23, 2019.

LE GRAND OPERA 1828 – 1867

THE PALAIS GARNIER or Opéra Garnier is an Opera House at the Place de l’Opéra in the 9th arrondissement of Paris, France. It was built for the Paris Opera from 1861 to 1875 at the Behest of Emperor Napoleon III. Initially referred to as “Le Nouvel Opéra de Paris” (The New Paris Opera), it soon became known as the Palais Garnier, “in Acknowledgment of its Extraordinary Opulence” and the Architect Charles Garnier’s Plans and Designs, which are representative of the Napoleon III Style. It was the Primary Theatre of the Paris Opera and its Associated Paris Opera Ballet until 1989, when a New Opera House, the Opéra Bastille, opened at the Place de la Bastille. The Company now uses the Palais Garnier mainly for Ballet. The Theatre has been a Monument Historique of France since 1923.

The Palais Garnier has been called “probably the Most Famous Opera House in the World, a Symbol of Paris like Notre Dame Cathedral, the Louvre, or the Sacré Coeur Basilica… The Palais Garnier also houses the Bibliothèque-Musée de l’Opéra de Paris (Paris Opera Library-Museum), which is managed by the Bibliothèque Nationale de France and is included in Unaccompanied Tours of the Palais Garnier.

The Façade and the Interior followed the Napoleon III Style Principle of leaving no Space without Decoration. Garnier used Polychromy, or a Variety of Colors, for Theatrical Effect, achieved Different Varieties of Marble and Stone, Porphyry, and Gilded Bronze. The Façade of the Opera used Seventeen Different Kinds of Material, arranged in very elaborate Multicolored Marble Friezes, Columns, and Lavish Statuary, many of which portray Deities of Greek Mythology…. The Principal Façade is on the South Side of the Building, overlooking the Place de l’Opéra and terminates the Perspective along the Avenue de l’Opéra. Fourteen Painters, Mosaicists and Seventy-Three Sculptors participated in the Creation of its Ornamentation

In 1821 the Opéra de Paris had moved into the Temporary Building known as the Salle Le Peletier on the rue Le Peletier. Since then a New Permanent Building had been desired…. With the Establishment of the Second Empire in 1852 and Georges-Eugène Haussmann’s Appointment as Prefect of the Seine in June 1853, Interest in a New Opera House revived. There was an Attempted Assassination of Emperor Napoleon III at the Entrance to the Salle Le Peletier on 14 January 1858. The Salle Le Peletier’s constricted Street Access highlighted the need for a Separate, more Secure Entrance for the Head of State. This Concern and the Inadequate Facilities and Temporary Nature of the Theatre gave added Urgency to the Building of a New State-Funded Opera House. By March, Haussmann settled on Rohault de Fleury’s proposed Site off the Boulevard des Capucines, although this Decision was not announced Publicly until 1860. A New Building would help resolve the Awkward Convergence of Streets at this Location, and the Site was Economical in Terms of the Cost of Land….
The Opera Library and Archives were founded in 1866 to ensure the Organization and Conservation of Historical and Administrative Documents owned by the Opera since the Creation of the Académie Royale de Musique et de Danse by Louis XIV. It was originally placed Under the Patronage of the Ministry of Fine Arts, attached in 1935 to the National Library and then integrated in the Music Department in 1942. The Library keeps Musical, Iconographic and Archive Records from the Activity of the Opéra and the Opéra Comique and all Documents regarding Lyric Art, Dance and Circus. The Museum is open to the Public and is accessible to the Readers of the Research Library.

The Celebrations got underway with an Inaugural Gala on 30 December Last Year, and continue at the Palais Garnier throughout 2019. The Exhibition titled ‘Un Air d’Italie – L’Opéra de Paris de Louis XIV à la Révolution’ (A certain Air of Italy. The Paris Opera from Louis VIX to the Revolution) organized with the Bibliothèque Nationale de France (BNF) retraces a Large Chunk of the Paris Opera’s History from Louis XIV’s Reign all the Way to the French Revolution. The Paris Opera is also going Off-Site to celebrate its Anniversary, with the ‘Edgar Degas à l’Opéra’ Exhibition at the Musée d’Orsay, the “Opéra Monde” at Centre Pompidou-Metz and “Habiller l’Opéra” at CNCS of Moulins…. From October 24, 2019 To February 2, 2020 the Library-Museum of the Opera de Paris will be holding an Exhibition called “Le Grand Opéra, 1828-1867. Le Spectacle de l’Histoire” exploring Events during this Specific Time.

The Series follows the Adventures of a Village of Gauls as they resist Roman Occupation in 50 BCE. They do so by means of a Magic Potion, brewed by their Druid Getafix (Panoramix in the French Version), which temporarily gives the Recipient Superhuman Strength. The Protagonists, the Title Character Asterix and his Friend Obelix, have Various Adventures. In many of the Stories, they travel to Foreign Countries, though other Tales are set in and around their Village. For much of the History of the Series settings in Gaul and abroad alternated, with even-numbered Volumes set abroad and odd-numbered Volumes set in Gaul, mostly in the Village.

The Success of the Series has led to the Adaptation of its Books into 14 Films: Ten Animated, and Four Live Action. There have also been a Number of Games based on the Characters, and a Theme Park near Paris called ‘Parc Astérix’. The very first French Satellite, Astérix, launched in 1965, was also named after the Comics Character. 100 Licences…. Astérix was originally serialised in Pilote Magazine, debuting in the First Issue on 29 October 1959. In 1961 the First Book was put together, titled “Asterix the Gaul”. From then on, Books were released generally on a Yearly Basis.
When Goscinny died in 1977, Uderzo continued the Series by Popular Demand of the Readers, who implored him to continue. He continued to issue New Volumes of the Series, but on a Less-Frequent Basis. The Humour encountered in the Asterix Comics often centers around Puns, Caricatures, and Tongue-In-Cheek Stereotypes of Contemporary European Nations and French Regions. Much of the Humour in the Initial Asterix Books was French-Specific, which delayed the Translation of the Books into other Languages for fear of losing the Jokes and the Spirit of the Story. Some Translations have actually added Local Humour: All the Fictional Characters in Asterix have Names which are Puns on their Roles or Personalities, and which follow certain Patterns specific to Nationality.

SYNOPSIS Of “ASTERIX AND THE CHIEFTAIN’S DAUGHTER” (Asterix et la Fille de Vercingetorix)

Written by: Jean-Yves Ferri – Drawings by: Didier Conrad
Published by: Les Éditions Albert René
First Worldwide Album Edition: octobre 24th, 2019

With an Anniversary and the Publication of a Long-Awaited New Album, 2019 is definitely a BIG YEAR for Asterix! As usual, the Latest Adventure for Asterix and Obelix begins in their Famous Gaulish Village. After an Escapade in Italy in 2017 with “Asterix and the Chariot Race”, it’s back to Armorica with a New Arrival who’ll turn the Village upside down! Asterix and the Chieftain’s Daughter is the Fourth Collaboration between Writer-Designer Jean-Yves Ferri and Illustrator Didier Conrad. The Creative Duo, ever eager to dream up New Adventures, are perfectly attuned to the Legendary World devised by René Goscinny and Albert Uderzo.

Upheavals and Pandemonium are definitely on the Horizon! The Daughter (called ADRENALINE) of the Famous Gaulish Chieftain Vercingetorix is being hunted down by the Romans. She secretly finds Refuge in the Village of our Indomitable Gauls (the only Place in Roman-Occupied Gaul that can guarantee her Protection). And let’s just say that having this very Special Teenager around will cause a Fair Few Intergenerational Ructions … She also meets tow other Special Teenagers Cétautomatix / Blinix (the Son of a Blacksmith) and Ordralfabétix / Selfix (the Son of a Fishmonger) which drives to New Adventures reminding to Contemporary Youth Issues…

Asterix & Obelix

Talking about the Spotlight on a Female Character, the Teenager ADRENALINE (Vercingetorix’s Daughter), Jean-Yves FERRI (Writer) said “At first I was thinking of wheeling out the Great Vercingetorix himself. The Problem was it would have risked messing with History too much. In the End, I felt that Vercingetorix should stay as he was, in other words as a Legendary Prologue to the Adventures of Asterix. And so I went with the Idea of a Daughter he might have had, which was Pure Invention, of course! And the Theme of the Album started to revolve around Teenagers … a Theme that hasn’t been explored since the Character of Young Justforkix in Asterix and the Normans. I thought it could be handled in a Different Way now”.

Talking about the Historical Context, Jean-Yves FERRI said “The Action takes place a Few Years after the Defeat at Alesia. The Idea was to imagine a Secret Network of Arvernis still Loyal to Vercingetorix. Obviously, they do their best to safeguard the Daughter of their Much-Mourned Leader. And her Torc, a Sort of Honorary Necklet that she inherited from her Father. As ever, I tried to use some Historical Elements … like mentioning a Mood of Dissent surrounding the Siege at Alesia, or the Way the Romans conducted Combat at Sea. The Asterix Series is about Laughter but the Humour works all the better if the Basis is Plausible.”

A Motorcycle, often called a Bike, Motorbike, or Cycle, is a Two or Three-Wheeled Motor Vehicle. Motorcycle Design varies greatly to suit a Range of Different Purposes: Long Distance Travel, Commuting, Cruising, Sport including Racing, and Off-Road Riding. Motorcycling is riding a Motorcycle and Related Social Activity such as joining a Motorcycle Club and attending Motorcycle Rallies.

The First Commercial Design for a Self-Propelled Cycle was a Three-Wheel Design called the Butler Petrol Cycle, conceived of Edward Butler in England in 1884. He exhibited his Plans for the Vehicle at the Stanley Cycle Show in London in 1884. The Vehicle was built by the Merryweather Fire Engine company in Greenwich, in 1888. In 1894, Hildebrand & Wolfmüller became the First Series Production Motorcycle, and the First to be called a Motorcycle. Excelsior Motor Company, originally a Bicycle Manufacturing Company based in Coventry, England, began Production of their First Motorcycle Model in 1896. The First Production Motorcycle in the US was the Orient-Aster, built by Charles Metz in 1898 at his Factory in Waltham, Massachusetts.

By 1920, Harley-Davidson was the Largest Manufacturer, with their Motorcycles being sold by Dealers in 67 countries. By the late 1920s or early 1930s, DKW in Germany took over as the Largest Manufacturer. In the 1950s, Streamlining began to play an increasing part in the Development of Racing Motorcycles and the “Dustbin Fairing” held out the Possibility of Radical Changes to Motorcycle Design. NSU and Moto Guzzi were in the Vanguard of this Development, both producing Very Radical Designs well ahead of their Time. NSU produced the most Advanced Design, but after the Deaths of Four NSU Riders in the 1954–1956 Seasons, they abandoned Further Development and quit Grand Prix Motorcycle Racing…. Various Features and Accessories may be attached to a Motorcycle either as OEM (Factory-Fitted) or Aftermarket. Such Accessories are selected by the Owner to enhance the Motorcycle’s Appearance, Safety, Performance, or Comfort, and may include anything from Mobile Electronics to Sidecars and Trailers.

– Motorcycle Rider Postures

*** Sport – the Rider leans forward into the Wind and the Weight of the Upper Torso is supported by the Rider’s Core at Low Speed and Air Pressure at High Speed. The Footpegs are below the Rider or to the Rear. The Reduced Frontal Area cuts Wind Resistance and allows Higher Speeds. At Low-Speed in this Position the Rider’s Arms may bear some of the Weight of the Rider’s Torso, which can be Problematic.

*** Standard – the Rider sits Upright or leans Forward Slightly. The Feet are below the Rider. These are Motorcycles that are not specialised to One Task, so they do not excel in any Particular Area. The Standard Posture is used with Touring and Commuting as well as Dirt and Dual-Sport Bikes, and may offer Advantages for Beginners.

*** Cruiser – the Rider sits at a Lower Seat Height with the Upper Torso Upright or Leaning Slightly Rearward. Legs are Extended Forwards, sometimes out of reach of the Regular Controls on Cruiser Pegs. The Low Seat Height can be a consideration for New or Short Riders. Handlebars tend to be High and Wide. The emphasis is on Comfort, while compromising Cornering Ability because of Low Ground Clearance and the Greater Likelihood of Scraping Foot Pegs, Floor Boards, or other parts if turns are taken at the Speeds other Motorcycles can more readily accomplish.

Although Comics has some Origins in 18th Century Japan, Comic Books were first popularized in the United States and the United Kingdom during the 1930s. The First Modern Comic Book, Famous Funnies, was released in the U.S. in 1933 and was a Reprinting of Earlier Newspaper Humor Comic Strips, which had established many of the Story-Telling Devices used in Comics The Term Comic Book derives from American Comic Books once being a Compilation of Comic Strips of a Humorous Tone; however, this Practice was replaced by featuring Stories of All Genres, usually not Humorous in Tone.

DC COMICS, Inc. is an American Comic Book Publisher. It is the Publishing Unit of DC Entertainment, a Subsidiary of Warner Bros. since 1967. DC Comics is one of the Largest and Oldest American Comic Book Companies. The Majority of its Publications take place within the Fictional DC Universe and feature Numerous Culturally Iconic Heroic Characters, most notably Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman, among many others. The Universe also features Well-Known Supervillains such as Lex Luthor, the Joker, Catwoman, and the Penguin. The Company has published Non-DC Universe-Related Material, including Watchmen, V for Vendetta, and many Titles under their Alternative Imprint Vertigo. The Initials “DC” came from the Company’s Popular Series Detective Comics, which featured Batman’s Debut and subsequently became Part of the Company’s Name.

SCIENCE FICTION (Sci-Fi or SF) is a Genre of Speculative Fiction that has been called the “Literature Of Ideas”. It typically deals with Imaginative and Futuristic Concepts such as Advanced Science and Technology, Time Travel, Parallel Universes, Fictional Worlds, Space Exploration, and Extraterrestrial Life. It often explores the Potential Consequences of Scientific Innovations. Science Fiction, whose Roots go back to Ancient Times, is related to Fantasy, Horror, and Superhero Fiction, and contains many Subgenres. However its exact Definition has long been disputed among Authors, Critics, and Scholars. Science Fiction Literature, Film, Television, and other Media have become Popular and Influential over much of the World. Besides providing Entertainment, it can also criticize Present-Day Society.

L’Aviation Club de France was a Gambling Club in Central Paris (104 Avenue des Champs-Élysées, in the 8e Arrondissement of Paris – France). The Club opened in 1907 and was widely regarded as a Classic Gambling Site. In 2005, the Grand Prix de Paris leg of the World Poker Tour took place at the Aviation Club. The Main Games played at the Aviation Club were : Poker 21 (Black Jack Parisian Style), Punto Banco, Poker à 3 cartes, Poker Caribbean Stud, poker Texas Hold’Em, Baccarat, Backgammon). The Club was closed in 2014, after a Raid by the Police, and placed in Liquidation in February 2015…. In 2018, The Barrière Group obtains the Authorization of the Ministry of the Interior to open a Gaming Club in the Old Premises of l’Aviation Club de France. The Actual Director of The “Club Barrière – Paris 104 Champs-Elysées” is Eric MICHELET. This is the First One by the Group in Paris, otherwise they have many in France. The Games are : Punto Banco, Texas Holdem, Omaha Poker, Poker 21, Poker 3 Cartes, Ultimate Poker.

Since the First Day of the Aviation Club de France’s Closure, a great number of French and International Personalities campaigned in favor of the Reopening of the Club, with the Hope that the Grand Instance Court in Paris would allow Poker to get back on what is considered to be the World’s Most Beautiful Avenue and, at the same time, help the ACF’s 213 Employees to keep their Jobs… Yet, despite the Club’s Concerns, the Support from the International Poker Community, and the Jury Award the ACF won at the 2014 France Poker Awards held in Deauville, the Number 104 of the Avenue des Champs-Élysées was no longer going to be Home to some of the Amazing Poker Games it held during its 100 Years of History.

The History of Gambling in France dates all the way back to at least the 1500s when the Queen was added to Decks of Cards. The French Deck was the Forerunner of the 52-Card Deck used today all over the World. The Lottery has also existed in France since the 16th Century. Through talent, determination, and by his reckoning some divine intervention, a young boy from Jalisco, Mexico, became one of the most internationally recognized guitarists of our time. Classic-rock veteran Carlos Santana discusses his rise to worldwide stardom in an exclusive interview for the August/September issue of AARP the Magazine (ATM), as well as celebrating milestone anniversaries, shedding his years of wisdom on others, and looking ahead to a future full of music and love.

After discovering his unique sound as a young musician, Santana’s career skyrocketed, finding commercial success with hits such as “Evil Ways,” “Oye Como Va” and “Black Magic Woman.” Decades later, Santana remains a household name across the globe.

This year marks a couple of milestone anniversaries for the musician – the 50th anniversary of Santana’s groundbreaking Woodstock performance and the “comeback 20th” commemorating the release of 1999’s “Supernatural” album, featuring the chart-topping song, “Smooth.”

At 72-years-young, the GRAMMY® and Latin GRAMMY-winning artist continues to sell records, perform for sold-out crowds and create new music. His messages of love and healing are ever-present in his latest album, “Africa Speaks,” which delves deeper into his roots and explores African rhythms with the help of sultry Spanish singer Buika.

Santana’s passion for sharing his professional and personal path to happiness goes hand in hand with his mantra to “reinvent yourself every day.” On self-fulfillment, he shares, “Three things: your spirit, your soul and your heart. If you find those and you really find them, you’re going to realize that innocence. Those things don’t leave you and you don’t misplace them or lose them. Those are the ingredients for you to have a glorious existence.”

– Selections from the Carlos Santana cover story in ATM’s August/September issue:

** On his life philosophy:

“It’s like everything in life right now; it has to do with being in the right place at the right time. The universe will bring you an abundance of opportunities and possibilities. It’s really all about trusting that before you got there, when you were sleeping, the universe was conspiring to give you something to blow your mind. Would you be open to receive it?”

** On discovering his own sound:

“I wanted to sound like B.B. King and Otis Rush and all the people I loved. Go inside a closet, turn the lights off, and play, and try to sound like them. And then I didn’t sound like them. I sounded like me. I didn’t realize that it was a blessing, instead of a curse. But when I stopped trying to sound like somebody else and really paid attention to me, I heard that sound that goes through all people’s hearts.”

** On how his music helps people:

“I know that we bring something to the four corners of the world. When you play music and can actually see people cry, and then laugh and dance at the same time, honey, that gives you confidence.”

** On exploring African rhythms on his new album:

“I want to bring new African music to the mainstream because I think people need this nutrient, this ingredient, to learn how to dance differently. Music needs melody, rhythm and heartfelt sounds. There is too much synthesized music. Basically, it’s like the shopping malls in America—so much of it sounds the same.”

** On advice he would give his younger self:

“Strip yourself naked from anything that anyone taught you about anything. And only listen to the voice of your heart, the voice of your light.”

** On life with his wife, Cindy Blackman Santana:

“When Cindy came in, we were so ready for each other. I’ve never had a partner where there are no issues ever, no drama mill, no issues about insecurity or someone with a laundry list of things I need to change. Nothing like that! We’re like two kids in a sandbox, and she’s got the shovel and I’ve got the bucket.”

The 2019 Festival finds a new home at The Armory in Manhattan’s Washington Heights neighborhood – the heart of the Hispanic community with 72% Hispanic residents – inspired by Lin-Manuel Miranda’s award-winning musical “In The Heights”, which was lauded as a love letter to the NYC Latino community.

Bostik, the specialty Adhesives Business Line of the Arkema Group, and A.S.O., Organizer of the Tour de France, joins their forces for the third year in the row to improve the Performance of Cyclists with a New Generation of Adhesive Bibs. Vital for the identification work carried out by the Commissioners, the bibs needed significant technical improvements to adapt to the Jersey Mesh in order to be lighter, more flexible and more elastic. Usually attached with Safety Pins, Bostik and A.S.O have been thinking about the development of a new generation of adhesive to apply on these materials in order to limit Irritation on the Skins, Perspiration and to better support the Movements of Cyclists in the Effort.

Initiated in 2016 by Bostik Smart Technology Center’s Researchers in Venette (France), Bostik has developed a hot melt adhesive solution (or hot melt glue) sprayed on the back of the bibs. Its formulation, based on Industrial Technologies and with an accurate dosing of 60 grams, has been tested in its Laboratories to assess its adhesion rate and flexibility in extreme conditions (Wind and Rain Resistance, Perspiration …). Solvent-Free formulated and made up with 10% of Bio-Sourced Materials derived from Pine Resin, the company is also committed to act as a responsible industrial company, in compliance with Arkema Group’s Commitments.
The result is an amazing simplicity: adhesive bibs that are easy to apply on the jerseys by pressing strongly and slowly on the Palm of the Hand. They provide both more comfort and lightness for Optimal Performance while being able to be removed without damaging the shirt and without leaving marks. “At a time when the 100th Anniversary of the Yellow Jersey will be celebrated this year, we are proud to continue to improve the Technical Equipment of the Cyclists thanks to our Know-How and our Innovations in this field,” says Vincent Legros, Chairman and CEO of Bostik. 6,688 bibs will be distributed to 176 cyclists throughout the Competition.

Facebook is generally considered the pinnacle of social media success, boasting the most active users. Facebook’s reign as the “king” of social media may come to an end, though, as younger generations favor more visually-driven platforms such as YouTube, Instagram, and Snapchat, suggests a new survey from The Manifest, a business news and how-to website.

While only 36% of Generation Zers report using Facebook weekly, 89% use YouTube, 74% use Instagram, and 68% use Snapchat at least once a week. “Snapchat and Instagram are cooler for younger generations because they have less content,” said Mark McIntyre, CEO of MaxAudience, an advertising and web design agency. “You get to choose to see all the good stuff and none of the junk. It’s way more image-based and way less text-based, and you don’t get everyone’s rant.”

YouTube Attracts Majority of Social Media Users From Every Generation. The only social media platform to attract more than half of every generation is YouTube. The majority of Generation Zers (89%), millennials (86%), Generation Xers (68%), and baby boomers (52%) use YouTube at least once a week, which may be correlated with people’s affinity for video content.

* Photo (L) – Graph – Generational YouTube use – Photo (R) – Graph – millennials vs. Gen Z social media use

Only 36% of Generation Zers (ages 13-17) use Facebook at least once a week, compared to 87% of millennials, 90% of Generation Xers, and 96% of baby boomers, according to a Survey of Social Media Users in the U.S. While Facebook’s User Base trends older, other Platforms such as Instagram, YouTube, and Snapchat have younger User Bases.

“Video content is the richest form of visual content,” said Joseph Rothstein, CEO of Social Media 55, a social media marketing agency. “It allows you not only to remember the sounds but also the sights.” Images Remain Preferred Content to Post for All Generations. Although demand for video content is rising, people still prefer posting images to social media. Approximately three-quarters of Generation Zers (77%), millennials (77%), and Generation Xers (72%), along with 52% of baby boomers, prefer posting images on social media.
“Imagery tells a story that we can all fill in,” said Jeremy Graves, CEO of Jeremy Graves Coaching and Consulting LLC, which helps businesses on matters related to strategy and culture. “We don’t have to read what someone else thinks. We can connect through imagery, and the story becomes our own instead of having to read someone else’s script.” Social media agencies and experts believe the increasing popularity of visual content has given rise to platforms that prioritize visuals over text-based content and allow users greater control of what they see and from whom.

– “Retour à la Case Départ” (My Ex-Life) by Stephen McCauley and published in FRANCE by Robert Laffont Editions. Stephen McCauley is an American author. He has written six novels, including “Insignificant Others” and “Alternatives To Sex”. Many have been National Bestsellers, and three have been made into Feature Films.. His best known Novel is “The Object of My Affection”, which was made into a Film starring Jennifer Aniston and Paul Rudd. He was raised outside Boston and went to Public Schools for his education. As an undergraduate, he attended the University of Vermont and then spent a year in France at the University of Nice.

Many years ago, David Hedges (now in his 50s) and Julie Fiske (Before coming out as gay,) had a short, sweet marriage, before they parted ways and left for opposite coasts. Now, they haven’t seen each other in almost 30 years, and both are going through a rough patch in life. David’s boyfriend, Soren, has left him for an older man. His job is exasperating. As his life reaches new lows, his weight reaches new highs. Nowadays, Julie makes ends meet by renting her rooms on Airbnb, her second marriage has recently ended, leaving her with shared custody of her high school-senior daughter, who’s not having a great time of it. And she has two whole months to come up with the money to buy said house from her second husband before their divorce is finalized. She’d just like David’s help organizing college plans for her 17-year-old daughter.
With sex off the table, David and Julie are yearning for a sort of companionship built on shared heartbreak and wry wisdom. Neither is looking for love, or even all that concerned with its absence. Nor are they out of the game entirely…. Things start to go awry when other people come sniffing around the protagonists’ houses.

– “Son Espionne Royale mène l’Enquête” (Her Royal Spyness) and “Son Espionne Royale et le Mystère Bavarois” (A Royal Pain). Both by Rhyss Bowen and published in FRANCE by Robert Laffont Editions. Janet Quin-Harkin is an author best known for her mystery novels for adults written under the name Rhys Bowen. Before she began writing novels, she worked in the drama department of the British Broadcasting Corporation in London and, later, for the Australian broadcasting system in Sydney, Australia. She also worked as a drama teacher and a dance teacher. She moved to the United States when she married John Quin-Harkin.
In the 1990s Quin-Harkin began writing mystery novels for adults under the name Rhys Bowen. She has written three series under this name: one featuring British aristocrat Lady Georgiana (“Georgie”) in 1930s England; one featuring Irish immigrant Molly Murphy living in early 1900s New York City; and one featuring a Welsh police constable named Evan Evans. She is also author of the Boyfriend Club series for young adults featuring four freshmen girls in Alta Mesa High School (Arizona): Roni, Ginger, Justine, and Karen.
Two First Books of The Royal Spyness Series (now published in France) :
** “Son Espionne Royale mène l’Enquête” (Her Royal Spyness). Lady Victoria Georgiana Charlotte Eugenie is the daughter to the Duke of Atholt and Rannoch. And she is flat broke. As the thirty-fourth in line for the throne, she has been taught only a few things, among them, the perfect curtsey. But when her brother cuts off her allowance, she leaves Scotland for London. Then an arrogant Frenchman, who wants her family’s 800-year-old estate for himself, winds up dead in her bathtub. Now her most important job is to clear her very long family name.
** “Son Espionne Royale et le Mystère Bavarois” (A Royal Pain). The Queen of England has concocted a plan in which Georgie is to entertain a Bavarian princess called Hanni, and conveniently place her in the playboy Prince’s path, in the hopes that he might finally marry. But queens never take money into account and Georgie has very little, Then there’s the worrying matter of the body in the bookshop and Hanni’s unwitting involvement with the Communist Party….

– “Etat de Siège – Trump seul Contre Tous” (Siege, Trump under Fire) b yMichael Wolff and published in FRANCE by Robert Laffont Editions. “Siege: Trump Under Fire” is a book by Michael Wolff and which according to him, details the behavior of U.S. President Donald Trump and his administration. The book is a sequel to “Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House”. Wolff’s narrative begins in February 2018, and ends with the release of the Mueller Report in March 2019. He claims to have 150 sources for the book. Michael Wolff’s “Siege: Trump Under Fire” looks at the 45th president’s second year in office, detailing everything from a potential indictment to Melania Trump’s mysterious hospitalization.
To keep us quaking, Wolff gives his gossipy narrative a militarised title: we are asked to imagine Trump holed up in the White House as his enemies, armed with subpoenas, close in. Mostly Siege retells scandalous stories that are pretty familiar, with few fresh disclosures. The book does have some sharp insights about Trump’s “mental deficiencies”. Wolff diagnoses narcissism and megalomania, but adds that Trump, despite his keening self-pity, is too imperceptive about people and incurious about their motives to suffer from paranoia…. Controversial author Michael Wolff’s new book, “Siege: Trump Under Fire,” hit stores in the U.S. under a barrage of criticism from both the left and right of the political aisle, and with little of the excitement generated by its predecessor…. Michael Wolff, who admits to a “train-wreck fascination with Trump”, was hoping for a catastrophe to coincide with his book’s publication, and reserved his final chapter to deal with the indictments he expected Mueller to issue.

The Sharon Tate Murders were a Mass Murder conducted by Members of the Manson Family on August 8–9, 1969, which claimed the Lives of Five People. Four Members of the Manson Family invaded the Rented Home of married Celebrity Couple, Actress Sharon Tate and Director Roman Polanski at 10050 Cielo Drive in Los Angeles. They murdered Tate, who was eight and a half months pregnant, along with Three Friends who were visiting at the time, and an 18-year-old Visitor, who was slain as he was departing the Home. Roman Polanski was not present on the Night of the Murders, as he was working on a Film in Europe.

Manson’s Followers committed a Series of Nine Murders at Four Locations in July and August 1969. In the Dark Ages, the Blood Queen Nimue (Milla Jovovich) unleashes a Plague on England until King Arthur (Mark Stanley) stops her with the Aid of Ganeida (Penelope Mitchell) , a Member of her Coven. Arthur uses Excalibur to dismember Nimue, and hides her Remains across England. When she returns in the present Day, it’s up to Hellboy (David Harbour) and his Pals in the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense (B.P.R.D.) to stop her. Created by Mike Mignola, Hellboy is a Musclebound Scarlet-Skinned Demon who hunts Mythical Monsters on behalf of a Shadowy Paramilitary Organization, with the Help of Humans scarred by the Paranormal…. Hellboy is reborn, stridently repurposed as an Ongoing Franchise Property.

When you watch a Human Body get sliced open or pulled apart, Computer-Generated Innards and carefully Digitized Fluids pouring out like wet confetti, it’s Natural to feel repulsed… More gore, more cursing, more darkness straight from the Opening Minutes, we gather that the new Hellboy promises to be a gritty and witty Take on Mike Mignola’s Demon Detective. A Big Part of Hellboy’s Charm is that under his Invulnerable Hide he hides a Vulnerable Heart, and David Harbour transmits Melancholy and Anger through the Layers of Red Makeup.

The New Director, Neil Marshall keeps throwing Fantastical Beasts at you whose Job it is to gather up the Head and Body Parts of the Ancient Blood Queen, Nimue (Milla Jovovich), which were buried in Separate Caskets after she was severed into Pieces in the Sixth Century by King Arthur and his Mighty Excalibur… In the Earlier Films, Hellboy, in his Capacity as an Indentured Agent for the Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense, had a Lively Team of Damaged Comrades but here he’s got the Feisty Alice (Sasha Lane) whose Main Job seems to be to vomit out Psychic Holograms and Ben Daimio (Daniel Dae Kim), a Dyspeptic Japanese-American Soldier who, due to the Encounter that scarred his Face, can transform into a Hissing Jaguar. Professor Broom (Ian McShane), Hellboy’s adoptive father and the founder of the B.P.R.D is also Part of the Team…

A Race Meeting known for its Glamour and Style. Dive headlong into a World of Wonder, a World of Long and Relaxing Picnics, Superb Concerts and the Very Best Racing. It’s a Day not to be missed and to be shared Trackside with Family, Friends and Partners, all with the Château de Chantilly as a Stunning Backdrop. And it’s the Ideal Setting for one of the Day’s most eagerly awaited Events : the Mademoiselle Diane by Longines Concours d’Elegance. Style, Audacity and Creativity ; Hats, Dresses and Accessories : they all come into play in an Event that is all about Elegance and in which more than 400 entrants vie to catch the Eye on a Catwalk in the Heart of the Village de Diane.

The Prix de Diane, sometimes referred to as the French Oaks, is a Group 1 Flat Horse Race in France open to Three-Year-Old Thoroughbred Fillies. It is run at Chantilly over a distance of 2,100 metres (about 1 mile and 2½ furlongs), and it is scheduled to take place each year in June. It is France’s equivalent of The Oaks, a Famous Race in England. The Event is named after the Mythological Goddess Diana (in French, “Diane”). It was established in 1843, and was originally restricted to Horses born and bred in France. Its distance was set at 2,100 metres, around 300 metres shorter than the English Version. It was switched to Versailles during the Revolution of 1848, and was cancelled due to the Franco-Prussian War in 1871. The Prix de Diane was abandoned throughout World War I, with no running from 1915 to 1918. The first two post-war Editions were held at Longchamp, and it returned to Chantilly in 1921. It took place at Longchamp again in 1936.

The Race was cancelled once during World War II, in 1940. It was staged at Longchamp in 1941 and 1942, and at Le Tremblay over 2,150 metres in 1943 and 1944. It returned to Longchamp for the following three years, and on the Second Occasion it was opened to Foreign Participants. The First Foreign-Trained Horse to win was Sweet Mimosa in 1970. The Present System of Race Grading was introduced in 1971, and the Prix de Diane was classed at the Highest Level, Group 1. A strike by Stable Lads caused the 1975 Running to be abandoned. That year’s Favourite had been Ivanjica. The Event was sponsored by Revlon from 1977 to 1982, and by Hermès from 1983 to 2007. It was not sponsored from 2008 to 2010, and has been backed by Longines since 2011 (2019 Guest Of Honor will be SIMON BAKER, Ambassador Longines De L’Elégance). Two fillies have won both the Prix de Diane and the English Oaks – “Fille de l’Air” in 1864 and “Pawneese” in 1976. Six Prix de Diane winners have subsequently won the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, most recently Treve in 2013.

“The Kid Who Would Be King” is a Children’s Film set in a Contemporary Britain. The Miseries its 12-year-old Hero Alex (Louis Ashbourne Serkis) endures Every Day at Dungate Academy are Typical of what Everybody Else seems to be experiencing too. He discovers an Ancient Blade on a Local Construction Site, realises it’s Excalibur, and ends up embarking on a Quest with his Best Friend Bedders (Dean Chaumoo) and the Bullies who have been making his Life Hell (Rhianna Dorris as Kaye & Tom Taylor as Lance), the Quartet slowly transforming into Four Pint-Sized Knights. Elsewhere, the Wicked Sorceress Morgana (Rebecca Ferguson) awakens Underground and sends her Minions after Excalibur. The Next Day, a Teenager appears from inside Stonehenge and presents himself at Alex’s School as a New Student. The Boy reveals himself to Alex as the Wizard Merlin, capable of Aging Backwards, but is also able to shift between his Arthurian Counterpart…

This Movie is Sentimental in all the Right Places, and Impossible to dislike. Writer-Director Joe Cornish gives the Legend of King Arthur and the Round Table a New Spin. Alex is the One who pulls the Sword from the Stone after finding the Gleaming Blade in a Building Site… Polite, Anglo, and thoroughly Unexceptional, Alex comes across as an Average Student in most Respects, proving that Chivalry is not dead. Alex always intervenes to help out his Friend, Bedders (Dean Chaumoo), who is teased and tormented by the Other Kids in the Playground. As a Result, he gets beaten up himself and is in Constant Trouble with the Teachers.

The Movie plays as a Kind of Tiddly Thrones, a Gateway Drug for Kids into Harder Fantasy, though the CGI is unlikely to scare even Little Ones… In the Film’s Best Gag Merlin frets : where in London can he find Beaver Urine and Beetle Blood for a Potion ? In the Ingredients of a Chicken-Shop Takeaway of course…

– “FOUCHE – t3. L’Homme d’Etat” (Fouché – t3 The Statesman) by Nicolas JUNCKER & Patrick MALLET. Published in FRANCE by Les Arènes Editions. This is the Third Tome Comic Book going through the Public Life of Famous French Statesman and Minister of Police under First Consul Bonaparte, who later became Emperor Napoleon. He was Particularly Known for his Ferocity with which he suppressed the Lyon Insurrection during the Revolution in 1793 and for being Minister of Police under the Directory, the Consulate, and the Empire.

Fouché’s Interests brought him into contact with the Marquis de Condorcet and the Girondists, and he became a Girondist himself. However, their Lack of Support for the Trial and Execution of King Louis XVI led him to join the Jacobins, the more Decided Partisans of Revolutionary Doctrine. Fouché was Strongly in Favor of the King’s Immediate Execution, and denounced those who wavered… Knowing the Unpopularity of the Directors, Fouché joined Bonaparte and Sieyès, who were plotting the Directory’s Overthrow. His Activity in furthering the 18 Brumaire coup ensured him the Favor of Bonaparte, who kept him in Office… Nevertheless, Napoleon did retain Feelings of Distrust, or even of Fear, towards Fouché, as was proven by his Conduct in the Early Days of 1808. While engaged in the Campaign of Spain, the Emperor heard Rumours that Fouché and Charles Maurice de Talleyrand, once Bitter Enemies, were having Meetings in Paris during which Joachim Murat, King of Naples, had been approached…
Fouché, knowing Napoleon’s Desire for Peace at the Close of 1809, undertook to make Secret Overtures to the British Cabinet of Spencer Perceval. Napoleon opened Negotiations only to find that Fouché had forestalled him. His Rage against his Minister was Extreme, and on 3 June 1810 he dismissed him from his Office. However, Napoleon never completely disgraced a Man who might again be Useful, and Fouché received the Governorship of the Rome Département. At the Moment of his Departure, Fouché took the Risk of not Surrendering to Napoleon all of certain Important Documents of his Former Ministry (falsely declaring that the some had been destroyed); the Emperor’s Anger was renewed, and Fouché, on learning of this after his Arrival to Florence, prepared to sail to the United States…
– “La Langue De TRUMP” (The Language of TRUMP) by Bérengère VIENNOT, Translater. Published in FRANCE by Les Arènes Editions. The Author has already a Long Experience in Translation, writting Colums in Newspapers and Teaching at Université Paris VII. She goes through the Main / Most Famous Public Interventions of U.S. President Donald TRUMP, mostly via Twitter and Interviews given to U.S. Media. In Lengthy and at Times Contradictory Remarks about the News Media (which he deemed “Important” and “Beautiful,” but also “So Bad” and “Unfair”), Mr. Trump calls himself “a Victim” of Unfair Coverage and declined to accept Responsibility for a Rise in Threats against Journalists since he took Office.
The Author critisizes Strongly the Actual U.S. President and compairs his Public Interventions with the Ones of Barack Obama, who seems Clear and more “Intellectual”, meaning in a Way “respecting People’s Intelligence”… One Result has been the Development of a Siege Mentality. As they mobilize to defend themselves, have Journalists lost their Capacity for Self-Analysis and Self-Criticism ? Self-Acclaim more often seems the Rule. National News Organizations have adopted Grand Slogans like ‘Democracy dies in Darkness’ (The Washington Post) and ‘The Truth demands our Attention’ (The New York Times)…

– “L’Exil Eternel, J’étais Médecin au Goulag” by Angela ROHR (The Eternal Exile, I Was Doctor in the Gulag). And Published in FRANCE by Les Arènes Editions. During more than 30 years, this “Journal” was lying in a Drawer. We had to wait until 1989 to see this Story published by a Small Austrian Publishing Company, after she died. Coming from the Austrian Aristocracy, Angela ROHR travels though XXth Century Europe and meets Intellectuals, Writers, SCientists, Politicians… Expressionists, Dadaists, Freud, Brecht, Rilke… She Tries Writing, studies Medicine in Paris, Berlin and Vienna… Start studying Psychoanalysis… With her Husband, she is happy to go to USSR to participate to the Construction of the “New Society”. After the Invasion of the Soviet Union by the Wehrmarcht in 1941, both are arrested because of being Austrians. Her Husband disappears and Angela is sentenced to 5 Years in the GULAG. After that, she is assigned to the Final Releguation “The Eternal Exile”. This is only after the Death of STALINE that she can go back to MOSCOW, in 1957. She dies in 1985, in Misery, without knowing that her Work will survive her.
Angela ROHR lived 16 Years in the GULAG. This Book / Testimony is about describing in a Rough Manner, without any Embellishment & sometimes with a Touch of Cynisim, her Everyday Life. What appears to be Cold, Senseless, “Chirurgical” is the Author’s Way to give us her Vision of Censored, Locked up Life…. Some People would put her aside Personalities like Alexandre Soljénitsyne, Evguénia Guinzbourg and Varlam Chalamov. The GULAG was the Government Agency in charge of the Soviet Forced-Labor Camp-System that was set up under Vladimir Lenin and reached its Peak during Joseph Stalin’s Rule from the 1930s to the early 1950s. English-Language Speakers also use the Word Gulag to refer to any Forced-Labor Camp in the Soviet Union, including Camps which existed in Post-Stalin Times. The Camps housed a Wide Range of Convicts, from Petty Criminals to Political Prisoners. Large Numbers were convicted by Simplified Procedures, such as by NKVD Troikas or by other Instruments of Extrajudicial Punishment. The Gulag is recognized by many as a Major Instrument of Political Repression in the Soviet Union.
– “Les Carnets de Guerre de Nicolaï NIKOULINE, Soldat de l’Armée Rouge 1941-1945” (Nikolaï NIKOULINE’s War Books, Soldier in the Soviet Red Army 1941-1945). Published in FRANCE by Les Arènes Editions. The Author was 17 when USSR goes to War against the IIIrd Reich, in Leningrad (June 1941). He became very quickly Radio Man, Artilleryman and finally Infantry Soldier. Four Years later, miraculously alive from the Vast Carnage costing 27 Million Civilian and Military Casualties, totaling the Highest Number of Deaths of World War II, we have a Precise Account of the Hell he went through during that Time.
The Battles on the Eastern Front of the Second World War constituted the Largest Military Confrontation in History. They were characterized by Unprecedented Ferocity, Wholesale Destruction, Mass Deportations, and Immense Loss of Life due to Combat, Starvation, Exposure, Disease, and Massacres. Of the estimated 70-85 million Deaths attributed to World War II, over 30 million, the Majority of them Civilian, occurred on the Eastern Front. The Eastern Front was Decisive in determining the Outcome in the European Theatre of Operations in World War II, eventually serving as the Main Reason for the Defeat of Nazi Germany and the Axis Nations. The Two Principal Belligerent Powers were Germany and the Soviet Union, along with their Respective Allies. Though never engaged in Military Action in the Eastern Front, the United States and the United Kingdom both provided Substantial Material Aid in the Form of the Lend-Lease to the Soviet Union.
A Long Time later, becoming Curator at the Ermitage Museum, he writes his Memoirs to fight against his Trauma. His Work is published in 2007 at the Request of his Relatives, provoking a Significant Event in RUSSIA where the Red Army and “The Great Patriotic War” are sacralized…. He just wanted to be a Witness and to describe only what he saw and went through. A Very Personal Testimony.

VOLTAIRE & JACQUELINE DE ROMILLY, Great Thinkers of Western Civilization

Selected by The Editorial Team 🙂

April 2019

Published by ROBERT LAFFONT Editions

Western Culture, sometimes equated with Western Civilization, Occidental Culture, the Western World, Western Society, and European Civilization, is a Term used very broadly to refer to a Heritage of Social Norms, Ethical Values, Traditional Customs, Belief Systems, Political Systems and Specific Artifacts and Technologies that have some Origin or Association with Europe. The Term also applies beyond Europe to Countries and Cultures whose Histories are strongly connected to Europe by Immigration, Colonization, or Influence.

– “VOLTAIRE – Questions Sur l’Encyclopédie” (VOLTAIRE – Questions About The Encyclopedia), presented and annotated by Nicholas CRONK, Christine MERVAUD & Gillian PINK. Published in FRANCE by Robert LAffont – Bouquins. Voltaire was a French Enlightenment Writer, Historian and Philosopher famous for his Wit, his Criticism of Christianity, especially the Roman Catholic Church, and his Advocacy of Freedom of Religion, Freedom of Speech, and Separation of Church and State. Voltaire was a Versatile and Prolific Writer, Producing Works in almost every Literary Form, including Plays, Poems, Novels, Essays and Historical and Scientific Works. He wrote more than 20,000 Letters and more than 2,000 Books and Pamphlets. He was an Outspoken Advocate of Civil Liberties, despite the Risk this placed him in under the Strict Censorship Laws of the Time. As a Satirical Polemicist, he frequently made use of his Works to criticize Intolerance, Religious Dogma and the French Institutions of his Day.
He is remembered and honored in France as a Courageous Polemicist who indefatigably fought for Civil Rights (as the Right to a Fair Trial and Freedom of Religion) and who denounced the Hypocrisies and Injustices of the Ancien Régime. Voltaire is also known for many Memorable Aphorisms, such as “Si Dieu n’existait pas, il faudrait l’inventer” (“If God did not exist, it would be necessary to invent him”) The Town of Ferney, where Voltaire lived out the last 20 years of his Life, was officially named Ferney-Voltaire in Honor of its most famous Resident in 1878. His Château is a Museum. Voltaire’s Library is preserved intact in the National Library of Russia at Saint Petersburg, Russia… In the 1950s, the Bibliographer and Translator Theodore Besterman started to collect, transcribe and publish all of Voltaire’s Writings. He founded the Voltaire Institute and Museum in Geneva where he began publishing Collected Volumes of Voltaire’s Correspondence. On his Death in 1976, he left his Collection to the University of Oxford, where the Voltaire Foundation became established as a Department…
In the Mid-1700s, a pair of French Writers set out to organize all Human Knowledge. They called their Project the “Encyclopédie”. Denis Diderot was the Driving Force behind the Project, and was accompanied by Jean le Rond d’Alembert until 1759. Diderot’s Encyclopedia was almost Insanely Vast. It incorporated more than 70,000 Entries, including Original Work from Voltaire, Rousseau, and other Luminaries of the French Enlightenment. Many Writers contributed Massive Amounts of Labor, almost all of it Unpaid, spanning Three Decades. “l’Encyclopédie”, ou “Dictionnaire raisonné des sciences, des arts et des métiers” was conceived of as a Vast System that would classify, hierarchize, and comprehend Human Knowledge. It aims to be a Reference Work for All Topics related to the Arts and Sciences, and to be a Militant Undertaking, spreading Enlightenment Ideas in order to found a New Order of Things.
This BOOK “Questions Sur L’Encyclopédie” stands as Voltaire’s Longest Work, and yet it is One of his Least Known. In this Complete Critical Edition, we can explore fully for the First Time the Relationship between the “Questions” and its Named Object of Enquiry “Diderot and D’Alembert’s Encyclopédie”. We can also assess the Complex Techniques by which Voltaire fashions New Material through Extensive Copying and Borrowing from his Earlier Publications. The Work as a Whole, written and revised principally between 1770 and 1774, is a Compendium of Voltaire’s Views on a Broad Range of Subjects including Religion, History, Art and Literature. It varies greatly in Style and Tone. It casts New Light on Familiar Themes (Justice, Humanity and Tolerance) and explores many New Ones.
– “Emerveillements, Réflexions sur la Grèce Antique” (Wonders, Reflections on Ancient Greece) by Jacqueline De ROMILLY, compiled by Marion BELLISSIME with Preface of Pascale CHARVET, Monique TREDE and Armand ZUCKER. Published in FRANCE by Robert Laffont – Bouquins. Jacqueline Worms de Romilly was a Franco-Greek Philologist, Classical Scholar and Fiction Writer. As a Schoolgirl, she became the First Female to qualify for a Prize in the Concours Général, taking the First Prize in Latin to French Translation and Second Prize in Ancient Greek in 1930. She then prepared for the École Normale Supérieure at the Lycée Louis-le-Grand. She entered the Class of 1933 of the ENS Ulm. She passed the Agrégation in Classics in 1936 ; however, because she was of Jewish Ancestry, the Vichy Government suspended her from her Teaching Duties during the Occupation of France. She became a Doctor of Letters at the University of Paris in 1947. Her Doctoral Thesis, a Treatment of Athenian Imperialism in Thucydides, was published as “Thucydide et l’Impérialisme Athénien”, and subsequently translated into English as “Thucydides and Athenian Imperialism”.
After being a Schoolteacher, she became a Professor at Lille University and subsequently at the Sorbonne, between 1957 and 1973. She later was promoted to the Chair of Greek and the Development of Moral and Political Thought at the Collège de France (the First Woman nominated to this Prestigious Institution). In 1988, she was the Second Woman (after Marguerite Yourcenar) to enter the Académie Française, being elected to Chair #7, which was previously occupied by André Roussin. In 1995, she obtained Greek Nationality and in 2000 was named as an Ambassador of Hellenism by the Greek Government. A One-Time President of the Association Guillaume Budé, she remained an Honorary President until her Death at a Hospital in Boulogne-Billancourt at the Age of 97. After having only received Baptism in 1940, she fully converted to Maronite Catholicism in 2008, aged 95.

To Be Released On April 3, 2019 in FRANCE

Directed by : David F. Sandberg
Produced by : Peter Safran
Story by : Henry Gayden, Darren Lemke
Based on : Characters from DC Comics
Starring : Zachary Levi, Mark Strong, Asher Angel, Jack Dylan Grazer, Djimon Hounsou
Distributed by : Warner Bros. Pictures
Running Time : 132 minutes
Release Dates : March 15, 2019 (Toronto), April 3, 2019 (France), April 5, 2019 (United States)

One year after Steppenwolf’s invasion, troubled 14-year-old Orphan Billy Batson (Asher Angel) is set to move in with the Vazquez Family and their other five Foster Kids. One day, Billy gets on a Subway car and finds himself transported to a different Realm where an Ancient Wizard gives him the Power to transform into a Godlike Adult Superhero by uttering the Word “Shazam!” Billy and his new Foster Brother Freddy Freeman (Jack Dylan Grazer) must discover Billy’s new Powers and how to use them to prevent the Villain Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (Mark Strong), who has Powers of his own, from committing Nefarious Acts.

A Dual Origin Story for both Shazam and Sivana, the two play as Perfect Parallels. Shazam is a Child in a Man’s Body, Sivana a Man stunted by his Experiences as a Child. Mark Strong plays Sivana Deadly Serious and Straight, which works perfectly against Zachary Levi’s Shazam, who struggles to take Anything Seriously at all. The Movie is Consistently Funny throughout, even in Moments of Peril, but it’s also not afraid to go to the Dark Side, balancing the two Tones expertly.

These Characters, most of whom are ripped from the Pages of DC Films Producer Geoff Johns and Gary Frank’s 2011 Shazam! Series, turn out to be an Unexpected Treat, instantly Charming and almost never Cloying. Billy Batson is played by Zachary Levi, a Rare Case in which a Costume that rounds an Actor’s Shoulders and Arms to almost Cartoonish Contour enhances the Character. This is not an Adult acting in the Role of a Child, but a Kid trapped in an Adult’s Body.
The Film has spent so much Time building out Billy, Freddy, and their Siblings that Sivana’s Character Development is left somewhat out in the Cold… He doesn’t want that Power for anything in particular; he just wants Power…. The Movie, directed by David F. Sandberg (“Annabelle: Creation”) from a Screenplay by Henry Gayden, is built upon a Fairly Standard Chassis. “Shazam!” is hardly the first Comic-Book Film to adopt a Tone of Breezy Postmodern Irreverence (eg. the “Deadpool” movies)…

Every year, the Most Important Sporting Events take place : the 6 Nations Rugby Tournament, Football Finals, Athletics Meetings…These Events are the Best Guarantee for an Intense Experience to share with your Family and Friends.

The Discussion of a National Stadium in France came about as a Result of the Country’s Selection to host the 1998 FIFA World Cup on 2 July 1992. As a Result of the Selection, the Country and the France Football Federation made a Commitment to construct an 80,000+ Capacity All-Seater Stadium with every Seat in the Facility being covered. It was the First Time in over 70 Years since the Construction of the Stade Olympique Yves-du-Manoir that a Stadium in France was being constructed for a Specific Event. Due to the Magnitude and Importance of the Facility, the Council of State was allowed First Hand Approach to how the Stadium would be constructed and paid for.

During the Developmental Phase, the Stadium was referred to in French as the Grand Stade (“Large Stadium” or “Great Stadium”). On 4 December 1995, the Ministry of Sport launched a Design Competition to decide on a Name for the Stadium. The Stadium was officially named the “Stade De France” after the Ministry heard a Proposal from French Football Legend Michel Platini, who recommended the Name. The Stadium was inaugurated on 28 January 1998 as it hosted a Football Match between France and Spain. The Total Cost of the Stadium was approximately €290 million. The Match was played in Front of 78,368 Spectators, which included President Jacques Chirac, with France winning the Match 1–0 with Zinedine Zidane scoring the Lone Goal, and the First-Ever in the Stade de France, in the 20th Minute. Six months later, France returned to the Stadium and defeated Brazil in the 1998 FIFA World Cup Final to earn their First World Cup Title.

The Stade de France has a Movable Stand which can be retracted to uncover Part of the Athletics Track. The Stadium was notably designed with the Assistance of a Software Simulation of Crowd in order to get an Accurate Observation of how it would look fully developed. The Facility was also intended to draw Interest in and develop the Area of the Plaine Saint-Denis, which straddle the Communes of Saint-Denis, Aubervilliers, and Saint-Ouen. The Primary Goal was to renovate the Area by building New Residential and Tertiary Sites. The Construction of the Stade de France’s Roof cost over €45 million. Its Elliptical Shape symbolizes the Universality of Sport in France. Its Area of Six Hectares and Weight, 13,000 Tons, is considered a Technical Marvel by many. It was designed to easily protect the 80,000 Spectators without covering the Playing Field.

Collin CAMERON Won A Silver Medal In Biathlon*

Canada’s Collin Cameron rocketed to hisFfirst World Para Nordic Skiing Championships title in Prince George, B.C. The 30-year-old Cameron, who won a Silver Medal in Biath, successfully defended Home Turf with a Golden Performance in the Men’s Sit-Skiing Sprint Competition. “It’s amazing. It is a Dream come True,” said Cameron. “I just wanted to come Out Here and go as Fast as I could. The Skis were like Rockets today so Kudos to all of the Wax Techs and Supporters on the Team that were aPpart of this Today.”

It was Sweet Redemption for the Sudbury, Ont. Native, who is one of the Most Respected Athletes in the Para nordic World. Heading into his First Paralympics one year ago, Cameron’s Medal Focus was on the Sprint Event. He came away from PyeongChang with Three Bronze Medals – Two in Biathlon, and one in the Cross-Country Ski Relay. It was a Bittersweet Games following a Fourth-Place Sprint Result.

“I’ve Honestly been dreaming about this Day since Korea,” said Cameron, who has two IPC World Cup Sprint Victories in his Career.

“I just wanted to come here in Front of the Home crowd and get a Win. My First World Championship Win – this feels Amazing!”

Cameron set a Blistering Pace in Each of his Three Trips around the One-Kilometre Track on a Frigid Monday Afternoon at the Caledonia Nordic Ski Club.

He dusted the Entire Field by nearly 10 Seconds in the Qualification Round. With the Fastest 12 Athletes advancing to the Semifinals for the Head-To-Head Heats, the Former Para Ice Hockey Player punched his Ticket into the Finals when he crossed the Line first in his Heat. The Fastest Three Athletes in each of the two Heats moved onto the Finals.

“I was Super Confident after qualifying. That was a Good Boost of Confidence knowing the Skis were Wicked Fast,” said Cameron.

Cameron shook off a Head Cold that he’s been battling all week to lead the Fastest Sit-Skiers on the Planet one Final Time through the Tall Pines lining the Nordic Tracks en route to winning the Gold Medal in front of a Boisterous Canadian Crowd.

“I felt Really Good. Everyone around me believed in me Today. It feels Amazing,” added Cameron. “To do this on Family Day is Even More Special. My Immediate Family are all Back Home, but my Team is my Extended Family and I have had Lots of Moms and Dads on the Team taking care of me over the Last Couple of Days. It is special to share this with them today.”

Cameron finished ahead of American Daniel Cnossen, who settled for the Silver Medal. Ukraine’s Taras Rad was Third.

Two Canadian Women secured a Spot in the Women’s Standing Skate-Sprint Final. The Youngest Woman in the Field at 18, Natalie Wilkie, finished Fourth while 28-year-old Emily Young fought for Sixth Place.

Wilkie, of Salmon Arm, B.C., scrapped her Way Up and Down the Hills on the Rolling 1.5-Kilometre Track, but finished just Shy of the Podium.

A Third-Place Sprint Finisher at the 2018 Paralympic Winter Games, Wilkie was in a Full-On Battle with Two Other Skiers for the Bronze Medal with just under 500 metres to go.

– “LE TRIOMPHE DES LUMIERES – Pourquoi il faut défendre la Raison, la Science et l’Humanisme” (Enlightenment Now : The Case for Reason, Science, Humanism, and Progress) by Steven PINKER. Published in FRANCE by Les Arènes Editions. The Author is an Canadian-born American Psychologist who advocated Evolutionary Explanations for the Functions of the Brain and thus for Language and Behaviour. His Early Studies on the Linguistic Behaviour of Children led him to endorse Noted Linguist Noam Chomsky’s Assertion that Humans possess an Innate Facility for Understanding Language. Eventually Steven Pinker concluded that this Facility arose as an Evolutionary Adaptation. He expressed this Conclusion in his First Popular Book, “The Language Instinct : How the Mind Creates Language” (1994). The Sequel, “How the Mind Works” (1997), earned a Nomination for the Pulitzer Prize for General Nonfiction.

In “Words and Rules : The Ingredients of Language” (1999) Steven Pinker offered an Analysis of the Cognitive Mechanisms that make Language Possible. Exhibiting a Lively Sense of Humour and a Talent for explaining Difficult Scientific Concepts Clearly, he argued that the Phenomenon of Language depended essentially on two Distinct Mental Processes : the memorization of Words and the Manipulation of them with Grammatical Rules. “The Blank Slate : The Modern Denial of Human Nature” (2002), was also a Pulitzer Prize Finalist.
Steven Pinker later illustrated the Manner in which the Structure and Semantics of Language reflect the Human Perception of Reality in “The Stuff of Thought: Language As a Window into Human Nature” (2007). Drawing on a Range of Psychological and Historical Data, he contended that the Modern Era was the Most Peaceful in Human History in “The Better Angels of Our Nature : Why Violence Has Declined” (2011),… and he noted other Positive Developments of the early 21st Century in “Enlightenment Now : The Case for Reason, Science, Humanism, and Progress” (2018).
The Enlightenment Project swims against Currents of Human Nature : Tribalism, Authoritarianism, Demonization, Magical Thinking ; which Demagogues are all too willing to exploit. Many Commentators, committed to Political, Religious, or Romantic Ideologies, fight a Rearguard Action against it. The Result is a Corrosive Fatalism and a Willingness to wreck the Precious Institutions of Liberal Democracy and Global Cooperation…. Is the World really falling apart ? Is the Ideal of Progress Obsolete ? In this Elegant Assessment of the Human Condition in the Third Millennium, Cognitive Scientist and Public Intellectual Steven Pinker urges us to step back from the Gory Headlines and Prophesies of Doom, which play to our Psychological Biases.

– “ALGORITHMES – La Bombe à Retardement” (Weapons of Math Destruction – How Big Data Increases Inequality and Threatens Democracy). Preface in the French Book/Version (published by Les Arènes Editions) of Cédric Villani who is a French Mathematician and Politician working primarily on Partial Differential Equations, Riemannian Geometry and Mathematical Physics. He was awarded the “Fields Medal” in 2010 and he was the Director of Sorbonne University’s Institut Henri Poincaré from 2009 to 2017. Cedric Villani was elected to the National Assembly, the Lower House of the French Parliament, during the 2017 Legislative Election. A member of “La République En Marche!”, he represents Essonne’s 5th Constituency. and was elected Vice President of the French Parliamentary Office for the Evaluation of Scientific and Technological Choices in July 2017.
Cathy (Catherine) O’Neil is an American Mathematician and the Author of the Blog “mathbabe.org” and Several Books on Data Science, including “Weapons of Math Destruction – How Big Data Increases Inequality and Threatens Democracy” (2016). She was the Former Director of the Lede Program in Data Practices at Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, Tow Center and was employed as Data Science Consultant at Johnson Research Labs. She lives in New York City and was active in the Occupy Movement. Her Previous Books were : “On Being a Data Skeptic” (2013), “Doing Data Science : Straight Talk from the Frontline” (2013).
This Powerful Study, subtitled “How Big Data Increases Inequality and Threatens Democracy”, exposes the Bias in Predictive Modelling. Cathy O’Neil’s Book came at just the Right Moment in 2016. It sounded the Alarm about Big Data just as it was becoming a Topic for Public Discussion. For example, she begins her Book with a Story about Sarah Wysocki, a Teacher who got fired from the D.C. Public School System because of how the Teacher Evaluation System ranked her Abilities. In the Ensuing Pages, Cathy O’Neil describes the Scoring System, how it was designed, and how it affected Sarah Wysocki. But the Broader Politics behind the Scoring System that ousted the Teacher are just as important… Her Main Point is that Predictive Models are Never Neutral but reflect the Goals and Ideology of those who create them. They also tend to load the Dice against Poor People, reinforcing Inequality in Society. From calculating University Rankings or Credit Ratings and processing Job Applications, to deciding what Advertising you see Online or what Stories appear in your Facebook News Feed, Algorithms play an Increasingly Important Role in our Lives.
In Conclusion, If you’ve been denied Job after Job, even some of those Entry-Level, Low-Wage Positions, Cathy O’Neil can explain. If the Rates you’re finding for Auto Insurance are Sky High, Cathy O’Neil knows why. If your Amazing Teacher was just fired or your Employer has started charging Higher Health Insurance Premiums for not using a Fitbit or the Number of Cops in your Neighborhood is growing at a Rate Disproportionate to Actual Crime, allow Cathy O’Neil to introduce you to the Opaque, Self-Reinforcing World of Weapons of Math destruction (WMDs). If you’re confused about why People on the Other Side of the Political Debate as you think very strongly the Way they do, there’s at least one Concrete Reason and Cathy O’Neil knows it. If you think using Data Analyses and Mathematics removes Pesky Human Biases, Cathy O’Neil’s Conversational “Weapons of Math Destruction” will disabuse you of that Notion.

Written by : Justin Zackham, Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas
Starring : Jennifer Lopez, Vanessa Hudgens, Leah Remini, Annaleigh Ashford, Dan Bucatinsky, Freddie Stroma, Milo Ventimiglia, Treat Williams, Larry Miller
Distributed by : STX Films
Running Time : 104 minutes
Release Dates : December 21, 2018 (United States), December 26, 2018 (France)

“SECOND ACT” is a Workplace Comedy with Maya (Jennifer Lopez), a 40-Year-Old Store Employee who gets passed over for a Promotion at the Superstore she manages, just because she never finished High School. She lives with a Doting Boyfriend, Trey (Milo Ventimiglia), who wants to start a Family despite her Reluctance. her Best Work Friend (Leah Remini) has a Whiz-Kid Son who sends out a Doctored Résumé and cooks up a Phony Facebook Page. Maya becomes an Ivy League Graduate and Peace Corps Alumna whose Faux-Vita catches the Eye of Anderson Clarke (Treat Williams), CEO of a Cosmetics Corporation attempting to rebrand….

“Second Act” is an Attempt to revitalize the J. Lo brand and put the now 49-year-old One-Woman Industry back on the Big Screen. The Film feels Finely tailored to her. Her Long Trajectory of Workplace Romantic Comedies placed a Woman of Colour Centre Stage, even Vaguely hinting at Issues of Race and Class beyond a Patina of WASPy-ness and Wedding Dresses… It’s been over 17 Years since she delighted us in “The Wedding Planner” and “Maid in Manhattan”, and they remain the Films, for Better of Worse, we most associate with Lopez in this Genre. This Time is no Different.
What the Film also accomplishes is Both solidifying Jennifer Lopez’s Timeless Charm and revealing her Aging Audience. Though she has a Hot, Young Love Interest in Trey (Milo Ventimiglia), the Focus isn’t on getting her Man back. Instead the Plot builds around Maya’s Relationship with her Best Friend (Leah Remini), her Struggle with her Past and her Efforts to pivot down an Entirely Different Channel in the “Second Act” of her Career…. Maya wants more… To have it all…. Maya’s Wish is the Movie’s Command !

“GEORGES BERNANOS – SCANDALE DE LA VERITE” (Georges Bernanos – Scandal To Tell The Truth). Published in FRANCE by Robert Laffont Editions. This Book represents the Gathering of Essays, Political Pamphlets, Articles and Testimonies fro Geroges Bernanos who was a French Author, and a Soldier in World War I. A Roman Catholic with Monarchist Leanings, he was Critical of Bourgeois thought and was opposed to what he identified as Defeatism. He believed this had led to France’s Defeat and Eventual Occupation by Germany in 1940 during World War II. Most of his Novels have been translated into English and frequently published in both Great Britain and the United States.

Despite his Royalist leanings and his Membership in Action Française’s Youth Organization, until 1932, Bernanos despised Fascism, which he described as “Disgustingly Monstrous” well before World War II broke out in Europe. He won the “Grand Prix du roman de l’Académie française” for “The Diary of a Country Priest” (Journal d’un Curé de Campagne), published in 1936. He initially supported Francisco Franco and the Falange at the Outset of the Spanish Civil War. However, after he observed the Conflict in Majorca and saw ‘a Terrorized People,’ he became disgusted with the Nacionales and criticized them in the Book “Diary of My Times” (1938). With Political Tensions rising in Europe, Bernanos emigrated to South America with his Family in 1938, settling in Brazil. From Exile he mocked the ‘Ridiculous’ Vichy Regime and became a Strong Supporter of the “Nationalist Free French Forces” led by the Conservative Charles De Gaulle.
After France’s Liberation, De Gaulle invited Gerorges Bernanos to return to his Homeland, offering him a Post in the Government. Bernanos did return but, disappointed to perceive no Signs of Spiritual Renewal, he declined to play an Active Role in French Political Life. Works in English Translations : “The Star of Satan”, “The Crime”, “The Diary of a Country Priest”, “A Diary of My Times”, “Plea for Liberty”, “The Open Mind”, “Monsieur Ouine”, “Sanctity Will Out”, “joy”, “Tradition of Freedom”, “The Fearless Heart”, “Night Is Darkest”, “Mouchette”, “The Impostor”.

– JUGES EN CORSE” (Judges in Corsica) under the Direction of Jean-Michel VERNE and Published in FRANCE by Robert Laffont Editions. The Book goes through the Open Testimonies of Former Three Judges and Six Prosecutors who played a a Significant Role in trying to apply the Law in French Island CORSICA during the 1990s. Their Names are: Roland MAHY (“The Disillusioned”), Bernard LAGRAS (“The Cleaner”), Philippe TOCCANIER (“The Uncompromising”), Patrice CAMBEROU (“The Tenacious”), Jacques DALLEST (“The Manager”), Claude CHOQUET (“The Coordinator”), Guillaume CPTELLE (“The Activist”), Nicolas BESSONE (“The Fighter”), ROmain MANIE-SAMSON (“Freedman”).
The Corsican Conflict was an Nationalist Conflict in Corsica during the Mid 20th Century and the Early 21st Century. Also known as the “French Troubles”, and the “Conflict in Corsica”, it is sometimes described as a “Guerrilla War” or a “Low-Level War”. The Conflict began in 1976. The 1990s saw the FLNC Organisation tear itself apart through a Series of Deadly Internal Feuds. Much of the Reason for the Splits and Feuds was the Political Rivalries of the Members within the Organisation as well as Personal Disputes.
In December 1996 the FLNC began a Christmas Offensive across Corsica. In Figari the FLNC launched a Machine-Gun Attack on Military Barracks there while in Zicavo a Grenade Attack was carried out on the Police Station. In 1997, the FLNC Canal-Habituel Faction called a Ceasefire which resulted in the Canal Historique Faction attempting to take Control of the Organisation and launch a Fresh Offensive. In 1998, FLNC Attacks soared with Policemen and Mayors among the Dead. The Offensive culminated in the Assassination of Claude Érignac in Ajaccio. Érignac was the French Prefect for Corsica and the Top Representative of the French Republic on the Island. The Attack was Highly Publicized and Criticized by the Locals,… Splits, Internal Feuding, Ceasefires and Breaches of Ceasefires have characterized the FLNC ever since 1999…
