Netflix and the American Cinematheque are joining forces to ensure the long-term future of the Egyptian Theatre, site of the first Hollywood movie premiere and the long-time home of the American Cinematheque. This collaboration will enable the nonprofit American Cinematheque to expand the scope and diversity of its widely praised movie and event programming, its filmmaker-centric festivals and its educational outreach at the beloved theater.

Established in Los Angeles in 1984 as a nonprofit member-supported cultural organization, the American Cinematheque creates spaces where both the public and members of the film industry come together as a community with the common language of film. The Egyptian Theatre will remain the home of the American Cinematheque with the organization’s celebrated curation team continuing to autonomously program Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Netflix will invest in the theater’s renovation and will use the revitalized space for special events, screenings and premieres during the week.

The Egyptian Theatre is a classic and esteemed movie palace originally built in 1922 during the silent film era. A fixture in Hollywood’s Golden Age, the Egyptian was the site of the first Hollywood movie premiere, of Robin Hood, starring Douglas Fairbanks.  At the premiere, Fairbanks  was joined by Cecil B. DeMille, Charlie Chaplin, Jesse L. Lasky, and Mary Pickford.  Other notable Silent-era premieres held at the Egyptian include: Cecil B. DeMille’s The Ten Commandments (1923), Charlie Chaplin’s The Gold Rush (1925) and Don Juan (1926) starring John Barrymore and Mary Astor.

The historic venue remains to this day an ultimate destination for moviegoers, where it has hosted groundbreaking film festivals and incredible cinematic experiences over the near-century it has been in Hollywood, the movie-making capital of the world. In 1996, the City of Los Angeles sold the building to the American Cinematheque as part of the City’s Hollywood Revitalization project. The Cinematheque then raised the extensive funds to renovate and restore the theater to its original grandeur and reopened it as a movie theater showcasing the longtime organization’s celebrated public programming.

In 2016, with the generous support of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, Turner Classic Movies and The Film Foundation, the projection booth at the Egyptian Theatre was retrofitted to begin screening 35mm nitrate film and is now one of only four theaters in the United States capable of showing this rare, ultra fragile and flammable film stock. Part of the new plans include upgrading equipment to enhance the audience experience, and renovating and restoring the theater.

The Cinematheque will continue to program and operate a second historic theater, the Aero in Santa Monica.

“The Egyptian Theatre is an incredible part of Hollywood history and has been treasured by the Los Angeles film community for nearly a century,” said Scott Stuber, head of Netflix Films. “We’re honored to partner with the American Cinematheque to preserve the theater’s storied legacy and continue providing remarkable film experiences for audiences. We look forward to expanding programming at the theater in ways that will benefit both cinema lovers and the community.”

“The American Cinematheque was honored to bring the Egyptian back to life in 1998, and together with Netflix we are thrilled to continue this stewardship by restoring it once again for a new generation of film fans to experience movies on the big screen,” said Chairman of the American Cinematheque, Rick Nicita. “The Egyptian Theatre remains our Hollywood home and we are grateful to both the City of Los Angeles and the Attorney General of the State of California as we accept this incredible opportunity that will greatly benefit the American Cinematheque.”

“Love for film is inseparable from L.A.’s history and identity,” said Mayor Eric Garcetti. “We are working toward the day when audiences can return to theaters –– and this extraordinary partnership will preserve an important piece of our cultural heritage that can be shared for years to come.”

“The Netflix and American Cinematheque partnership at the Egyptian Theater is a win-win for film, historic preservation, and the arts,” said Councilmember Mitch O’Farrell, Los Angeles City Council 13th District. “The collaboration ensures the cultural destination remains in the Heart of Hollywood for decades to come.”

Designing Buildings

That Stand Out

“Wolf Reicht Architects”

Some buildings are created to be practical, others — to please the eye, but only a few can shape a community’s character, form its identity and become a true landmark for both residents and tourists. This is exactly the story with works from Wolf Reicht Architects, this year’s winner of Luxury Lifestyle Awards in the category of The Best Luxury Architect and Interior Design Studio in Austria.
Starting out as a passion project of a highly educated and experienced professional Wolfgang Reicht, the Wolf Reicht Architects company became a real dream team’s hub. Today, an interdisciplinary group of highly skilled professionals is united by a holistic idea of designing a world that is bright, unique and full of character. They know that no detail is too small, because, just like in nature, multiplicity of simple interactions leads to complex systems in architecture as well.
The eminent experts of Luxury Lifestyle Awards had never heard about the “efficient aesthetics” concept before they started learning about Wolf Reicht Architects, but it turned out to be simply genius. Iconic buildings are born from inspiration, which, for its part, comes from hybrid and flexible designs. Exterior and interior details fuse together to create a synergetic effect. From the first sketch to the ribbon-cutting — the process is like a symphony, where technology and emotion are combined.
For this to happen, the architect has to fully understand the client and vice versa. Wolfgang Reicht is famous for his vision and the ability to create added value for a building by making it distinctive. With his company’s projects, the message is always clear at first sight, creating an emotional and intellectual imprint. Thanks to that, metropolises are becoming less alike, individual boroughs have their unique landmarks, and people get one more reason to smile when they look around.

Until recently, Wolf Reicht’s projects were mainly located in India and China. However, European cities are also starting to drown in endless kilometers of anonymity, with lookalike districts popping up here and there. This, combined with the rising urge of Chinese investors to expand to Europe, is opening new markets for Wolf Reicht Architects, including Austria — their homeland. Several projects, both individual and large-scale, were already completed or commenced there.

In architecture, just like with everything in life, things have to be done wholeheartedly to turn out well. Only in this case will the buildings tell stories, inspire people to chase their own dreams and earn the title of “iconic”. In fact, if buildings could actually become rock stars, the works by Wolf Reicht Architects would definitely be the first ones in the line.

Chaa Creek Is Cautiously Optimistic

– and Busy –

As Belize Looks Towards Reopening

Selected by The Editorial Team 🙂

ARCHITECTURE / HOSPITALITY – BOLD BLUEBERRY AND CHERRY MAGAZINE

June 01, 2020

Belize is still the only country in the Americas to be COVID-19-free, and The Lodge at Chaa Creek, while still focused on the health and safety of guests and staff, is busy preparing for a return to normalcy, according to the popular Belizean eco-resort’s owners.

With Belize the first, and still the  only country in the Americas  to be COVID-19 free, and with no new cases reported,  The Lodge at Chaa Creek  is busy preparing to welcome guests and a return to normalcy, the popular Belizean eco-resort’s owners say.

Founding owners Mick and Lucy Fleming praised the government of Belize for early intervention measures, and the Belizean people for working together to maintain social distancing and other protocols. This is allowing for some restrictions to be eased and the tourism industry to plan for the future.

With the country’s effective handling of the pandemic, the hospitality industry may soon open to local tourism before international travel begins again.

During a  May 14 virtual press conference , Belize’s Prime Minister Dean Barrow flagged a partial easing of restrictions while cautioning that this should not be misinterpreted as “a free pass” to ignore those restrictions still in place.

While The Lodge at Chaa Creek and its Belize Rainforest Retreat have temporarily ceased accepting guests, work continues to maintain the sprawling eco-resort’s infrastructure and the 400-acre private nature reserve the Flemings established around it.

And while the Fleming family hope to see Chaa Creek reopen as soon as possible, they, like all members of the global travel industry, are dependent on the timeframes of airlines and overseas governments.

The Lodge at Chaa Creek is a multi-award winning eco resort set within a 400-acre private nature reserve along the banks of the Macal River in Belize. It was  recognised by National Geographic  with first place honours at the 2017 World Legacy Awards held in Berlin.

Founding owners SAID

“We’ve beginning to think about making the transition from containment and lockdown to opening up and welcoming visitors, and that’s very exciting,” Ms Fleming, a past president of the Belize Tourism Industry Association (BTIA), said.

“It’s a challenging time in that we still need to be extremely careful about putting in place measures to safeguard the health of our visitors and staff, but there’s a very positive atmosphere in Belize right now,” she added.

“Today marks the thirty-first day without anyone testing positive for the novel coronavirus. We therefore are holding steady at eighteen, the total number of persons to have been infected in our country. Of these very sadly two have died but all the others have recovered so that Belize is now one of only twelve countries and territories in the entire world to be currently COVID-19 free. That is quite an achievement, it is not cause to declare victory,” Mr Barrow declared.

“Our relative success so far is a reason for thanksgiving but it must not occasion carelessness or any false sense of security,” he added.

Ms Fleming said Chaa Creek, along with many of their Belize tourism industry colleagues, is taking that cautious approach while remaining positive.

The Hinduja Group and Obrascon Huarte Lain Desarollos (OHLD) announced an extension to its partnership with Raffles Hotels & Resorts. An agreement was signed in June 2017 for Raffles to operate a 125-room and suites flagship hotel at the iconic Old War Office building in London.  A further agreement has now been signed confirming Raffles as operator for the 85 residences at this landmark destination on Whitehall.

This latest agreement ensures that the service hallmarks of the prestigious Raffles brand – gracious and intuitive staff, personalised attention and a timeless ambience – will be delivered seamlessly to owners of The OWO Residences by Raffles. The OWO Residences by Raffles will be the first Raffles-branded residences in the UK and Europe, further reinforcing the uniqueness of the offering.

Along with the signing of Raffles, The Hinduja Group and OHLD officially unveiled the new name for the project, The OWO’, at a topping out ceremony marking a significant milestone towards the project’s opening early 2022. The new name is distinctive whilst celebrating and respecting the history and spirit of the Old War Office.

The Grade II* listed Old War Office building, originally completed in 1906, is steeped in history. This architectural masterpiece has witnessed world-shaping events whilst influential political and military leaders including Winston Churchill, David Lloyd George, and Lord Kitchener held office.

Its transformative journey began in 2017 when The Hinduja Group and OHLD announced plans to restore and redevelop the iconic building into a new destination of 760,000 square feet comprising 125-room and suite Raffles hotel, 85 private residences, nine restaurants and bars, a destination spa and boutique retail.

With its transformation now well underway, the topping out ceremony is an important moment for the project as it marks reaching the highest point in the building.

Gopichand P Hinduja, the Hinduja Group’s Co-Chairman, said: “This is an exciting and momentous day for the Old War Office as we reach the highest point of the building and announce the official name of the project as ‘The OWO’. After an exhaustive process, Raffles were selected above other leading global hotel brands as our partner to deliver a world-class hotel experience of peace and warmth. We are delighted to announce Raffles as operators of the branded residences; the first of their kind in Europe. The level of servicing Raffles will offer to future residence owners is unparalleled and will set a new benchmark in London.”

OHL’s Chief Executive Officer, Mr Jose Antonio Fernandez Gallar added: “The Old War Office has been an ambitious and technically complex architectural and engineering project, and we are delighted to achieve this significant milestone as we progress towards the project’s opening early 2022.“

Sébastien Bazin, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Accor, said: “Raffles is a beloved brand with British roots, named after the British statesman and founder of Singapore, Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles, so it is very fitting that Raffles is coming home to London and that this will be our first residential project in Europe. It is an enormous privilege to be partnering with the Hinduja family and OHLD. We are thrilled to take part in this adventure and to add “The OWO” to our Raffles collection, as this sublime location will undoubtedly make the list of the five most beautiful hotels in the world, alongside Raffles Singapore.”

The OWO project is being developed by the Hinduja Group and its joint venture partner OHLD through their Special Purpose Vehicles. Mr Madani Sow, previously CEO and UK Chairman for Bouygues Construction, has been appointed as Chief Executive Officer to oversee the development management of the project. The project has been designed by UK-based EPR Architects, with the hotel interiors designed by New York-based designer Thierry Despont, and the residences designed by 1508 London. The principal contractor is Ardmore Group, with Toureen Group completing the structural works, and structural engineers are Elliott Wood.

Fairmont Hotels & Resorts  just announced a new Global Brand Ambassador – the Oscar-winning actress and UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, Susan Sarandon. In this unique role, Ms. Sarandon will star in a global brand campaign that will portray the transformative power of travel, connecting Fairmont’s history and majestic hotels with modern sensibilities and the dreams of a new generation of travelers. The campaign is expected to be revealed in key markets around the world in Spring 2020.

“Fairmont and Susan Sarandon share a spirit of adventure, a passion for thinking globally and acting locally, and a history of turning words into action,” said Sharon Cohen, Vice President, Fairmont Hotels & Resorts. “We chose Susan to represent the essence of Fairmont – representing a strength of character and timeless sophistication.”
The collaboration between Ms. Sarandon and the Fairmont brand will focus on their shared values. Both Fairmont and Ms. Sarandon are dedicated to professional excellence and award-winning achievement. With Oscar, BAFTA, and SAG awards, along with a filmography of over 100 films, Susan Sarandon continues to inspire audiences with new work, including roles in The Meddler, The Jesus Rolls and Ray Donovan.

“It is a privilege to work with Fairmont, a company for whose values I have great respect and whose extraordinary hotels are a joy to experience,” said Ms. Sarandon. “Together we hope to convey a sense of life as a grand journey that we hope will be meaningful and inspiring to guests and fans of Fairmont around the world.”

Mother, activist and Oscar-winning Hollywood actress will star in the luxury brand’s new global marketing campaign launching Spring 2020

Similarly, Ms. Sarandon is known among her industry as a trailblazer who leads with her heart. From her early work in the cult classic film, Thelma & Louise, to her recent performance as the face of Roger Vivier’s autumn/winter 2019 campaign, and starring in the 2016 music video “Fire”, by French electronic-pop duo Justice, Ms. Sarandon consistently portrays strong characters with independence, grace and great authenticity – qualities that Fairmont holds in high esteem.

Fairmont also shares Ms. Sarandon’s commitment to environmental concerns, and her passion for exploration. Fairmont’s first hotels, which can easily be described as grand castles, were born in the rugged hills of California and the majestic Canadian Rockies. The intrepid William Cornelius Van Horne chose the site of the Fairmont Banff Springs with the remark, “If we can’t export the scenery, we’ll import the tourists.”

Fairmont’s pioneering approach to hospitality extends to its mission for preserving and protecting the landscapes it calls home. Nearly 30 years ago, Fairmont became the first luxury hotel brand with a comprehensive and global sustainability program, that now forms part of the Accor’s Planet 21 program. Along the way, the brand has built an enviable reputation as a company that continuously invests in its colleagues, guests, and destinations in order to provide genuine hospitality and authentically local guest experiences in diverse parts of the world, without compromising long-term sustainability and responsible tourism. Over the last few years, standout initiatives have included the brand’s 2015 pledge in coordination with WWF to reduce CO2 emissions, its 2018 commitment to ban the use of single-use plastic straws and its ever popular Bee Sustainable program, launched in 2008, which focuses on bee habitat protection and pollination.

The new partnership with Ms. Sarandon further builds on Fairmont’s history of connections in the world of cinema. Generations of filmmakers and directors have focused their cameras on Fairmont properties to portray luxury accommodations that truly represent their destinations. As part of its Fairmont Loves Film event series, the brand has also worked with film director and screenwriter Gia Coppola as well as artist Cuba Tornado Scott, who created a short film at Fairmont San Francisco exploring Fairmont’s historic connections to the world of cinema and the attachment to the brand’s legendary hotels.

Several Fairmont hotels, such as Fairmont San Francisco, The Plaza in New York City, The Savoy in London and Toronto’s Fairmont Royal York have also achieved impressive film credits. A few of the more high profile and recent movies shot on location at Fairmont hotels include Ocean’s 8, American Hustle, The PostMolly’s Game  SpotlightStan & OllieAlmost Famous, The Great GatsbyHome Alone 2Bride Wars50 Shades of Grey, and Notting Hill. Fairmont hotels also appear regularly on the smaller screen. For example, on the TV show Suits, character Rachel Zane, played by Meghan Markle, has her wedding at The Plaza in New York City, although the scenes were shot at the Fairmont Royal York in Toronto. Fans of the golden age of film might also spot Fairmont hotels in such movie classics as North by Northwest, River of No Return, Vertigo, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, and The French Lieutenant’s Woman. Ms. Sarandon herself has appeared in a number of films shot on-location at Fairmont hotels, including Little WomenThe January Man and King of Gypsies.
